I have been interested in these 357 snubbies since I saw them in January when they were introduced. I did not care for the polished stainless, I was not interested in another "matte" stainless revolver either. When I saw this black nitride version pop up at a decent price on Gunbroker, I snatched it up.
First impressions: Smaller and lighter than I thought it would be based on comparing the available stats online to the K6s DAO and my 642, both of which I like very much. The 2 ounce difference in weight from the K6S is noticeable. The gun feels well balanced and compact. For whatever reason, I don't pocket carry the K6S, but the moment I inspected the SDR at my FFL, I thought "easy pocket carry."
The gun does indeed fit into my Alabama pocket holster for my 642. albeit more snugly than the 642, but still completely useable. It also fits into my K6S Backbone pocket holster from AHolster. So, I have to say that there are probably some holsters it will not fit into for a J frame, but the variety I have tried it with on my end all would work just fine. To me, it seems more similar in size and feel to the 642 than the K6S.
I loaded up some snap caps and went to town cycling the gun. Double action pull is nice and even. Single action is nice and light with a crisp break and no take up. Timing is good. Lockup is good. Fit and finish is good. I like the removeable cylinder via the button on the right side. Cylinder release is easy to manipulate. FO sights are good and far better than what you get on a typical snubby revolver unless you are working with a K6S or adjustable sighted S&W.
The nitride finish is evenly applied and there are no rough spots on the machining of the gun whatsoever. The grips it comes with feel just fine. I tend to carry guns like this with Buffalo Bore 38+P 158gr LSWCHPs which do 1000 fps and work great in my K6S.
I shot 100 rounds of 158 gr FMJ 38 special, 20 rounds of Buffalo Bore 158g +P LSWCHP, 18 rounds of 135 gr Gold Dot 357 magnums. i was short on time so I did not get to shoot as much as I had hoped.
No issues whatsoever. Good sight picture, nice trigger, handled recoil very well with the stock grips on it. The magnums were completely doable. The Buffalo Bore, my preferred carry ammo for smaller guns like this, were spot on with the sight picture. I will continue to try out other magnum ammo I have to see if this gun might merit carrying 357 rather than 38+P.
In my opinion, the gun is good to go for carry. It even made for an enjoyable range gun. I shot out to 17 yards with it and had no trouble pegging head shots. Up close at 5 & 7 yards, you would have to really work hard to NOT hit COM in rapid fire with this thing.
