Actually Kenny, by changing out the stock plastic guide rod to stainless will make a difference if you shoot a lot of rounds. Even just changing out to shiney steel will benefit over black plastic in just looks alone.

What I've found in my searches, is the stock plastic rod will get hot enough to start loosing its support for the slide and you'll start getting FTF and Short Stroking and other feed issues.

I just ordered(last nite) a rod for my SD from Galloway to cure this issue specifically, and a few other things.

I see no reason to change until there is a malfunction of some kind. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Most people will never have a problem with the plastic one. Mine still looks new.

I put a ss rod with an 18lb spring in my 9VE. It is from NDZ performance. The rod is actually for a Glock 19 but they will fit the 9VE and 40VE. NDZ rods and springs are a bit less expensive than Galloway and has free (and fast) shipping. Not saying Galloway is not quality, just that I chose the NDZ line of rods.

I changed out the rod in my sd9ve for a SS Galloway 17# rod.

Not because, the gun didn't work or work well for many years, but because I wanted the gun to work, FOREVER -- WHENEVER.

Also, if you sell it and the next person knows you upgraded to better reliability, looks and performance, it'll hold a better price over a stock gun where you'd possibly change out parts anyway.
