Took my M625-6 to the range. First things first. I am not a professional shooter, nor am I a gunsmith. So these are just my impressions. I like the way the gun feels in my hand. The balance to me is good, not great, seems to me a little barrel heavy, probably the slab side is a little heavier than normal, but not bad at all. Trigger pull in DA was very good not gritty or too firm. Trigger in SA was very crisp.
I have semi-auto .45's, so I am accustomed to the round, but not in a revolver.. I do admit being a little fumble fingered with the moon clips. Need to work on that at home. I also admit to being a little nervous because I knew I would be writing this report when I finished. I decided to fire the first rounds in DA, without the compensator, just the muzzle cap. I will be using PMC 230 grain FMJ rounds because that is what I have and will be shooting at approximately 20 yards. Hard to tell exact distances at my range.
I must have been nervous because I shot low left on the first several rounds, but managed to get back on target with the last two rounds. The next 6 rounds were grouped well for a novice like myself and was happy. I found the recoil very manageable and the big red site was easy to re-acquire after firing. Gosh, I like this.
I then decided to change out the muzzle cap for the compensator and still shoot in DA. The change out was very easy, no problems. Firing the same rounds in DA, I found I shot just a little better than previously, but I feel that is mainly due to getting used to the site and the feel of the gun. Honestly, I could not tell much, if any, difference in recoil with the compensator on. The muzzle blast was different, but hard to explain how it was different.
Went on to fire the rest of the box, and part of another, in SA. I really enjoyed the way the gun handled. I shot it with the original Hogue grips on it and they were great. Very comfortable to me, although if I were to shoot for more than a couple of boxes of ammo, I would probably look for some rubber grips, but really the rubber grips are not necessary. Fumbled around with the moon clips, but with practice, I will get better in that area.
Overall, I love it! Of course, I am partial to it because I own it. I cannot compare it to other M625's, because I have not shot any. At 43ozs, it is no light weight and I do not envision me carrying it on a daily basis, but it was a great experience. The gun lacks the wallop that you get when shooting full house .44 mags in a M29-2, but is not as tame as a .38 through a M28-2. To me, the recoil was somewhere in between those sensations. Hope that makes sense. No pictures of the target. In my haste to leave, I left them at the range.
