Second Smith, an L-frame..

I walked in a local shop Tuesday and after handling this I knew I couldn't leave without it. Ended up picking it up this afternoon and am delighted with her. This gun doesn't have any handling marks that I can find and an ever so slight turn line - the rifling looks new! I pulled the grips when cleaning and didn't see any numbering but they did have 'January 1986' stamped in them. Can anyone give me an idea of build for serial #AJY58XX?

That's one fine revolver you have there. You should check above the serial number for an over-stamped "M". The 586's and 686's were recalled in 1987.

Your revolver was probably built sometime between July 1985 and Nov 1985.

That seals it. I have to own at least one L frame now. That just looks too good. My N frames may climb out of the safe and beat me up during the night for admitting to that...

Great looking gun. I've had two 686s, one of which I just sold about 2 months ago. Why? I prefer blued. Eventually I'd like to get a nice 586 like you did.

When I was trying to find a build date I read about the recall. This gun does not have the M - I don't believe it to have ever been fired either. If I call S&W will they still honor the recall?

I think the 6inch 586 is about the best looking of the L frame revolvers... I would LOVE one but with the amount of use I give mine a 686 makes much more sense.

Beautiful mate, just beautiful. First handgun I EVER fire was a 586, that would be around 1983 or 84. It was one of the very first to land here in Australia.

I guess my true passion will always be for the N frames, but a man cannot live with just N frames alone... It would be a hard call for me to make if I were to see a 586+ and a 28 or 27 side by side for sale. I have always had a sweet spot for the + L frames since I love the stop notches between the cylinders. I'm such a nut for that I would even buy a seven shot 27 over an eight shot... Not that it makes it stronger in any way needed or that they would ever make one, it's just a personal aesthetics thing. That, and I'm just strange like that...

That's the gun I wanted when I went to the gun store to buy a Smith 357. I heard they just received a bunch of 586s, but when I got there I found they were all 6" models, not a single 4". Really had my heart set on the 4", although I came pretty darn close to picking one up anyway. Walked out with a 4" 686-1 instead. I still may go back and get a 6" 586, just because I love blued guns...

I've shot J-frames and now own a K and an L, so I'm just working my way down alphabetically

I like 4" guns because of the versatility but if I found a 6" in like condition I'd probably have to leave with both

You should call S&W, but I believe they still do; no cost to you, either.

Hey William - look at the serial number under the crane. If there is an 'M' stamped above the number it's been sent in for the recall. If not call Smith!
