Hello All,

I have a Model 60 serial number 23982 (R167803) and there is a horizontal “S” as well as “C9” stamped under the crane. It is a nickel j-frame in .38spl.

I would appreciate knowing the manufacture date if you can help.

Thank you

Maybe it is stainless. I’m pretty new to these older S&Ws.

Right Alan! My bad. The full number is R167803. Thanks

Welcome aboard from ol' Wyo.

Based on a few above and below your serial number in the
database I'd say somewhere around the third quarter of 1976.

If you take the stocks off you should find a serial number stamped
on the inside of the right one. You should also see an S stamped
on the bottom of the barrel and the lower left side of the grip
frame, and a V stamped on the back of the cylinder. The S and C9
you see on the frame in the yoke cut (not crane on a S&W) are
fitters/assemblers/inspectors marks.
