Self Defense Can Sometimes Go South In A Hurry

No one in their right mind desires to slay another human being. It is a horrible, stressful, life altering event. So is a severe brain injury or death. Don't over think this stuff. No one expects you to NOT defend your life if it is threatened. Do not seek out trouble. Words to live by, " Mind your business ", and if you must defend your life you will KNOW it is that time.

No one expects you to NOT defend your life if it is threatened.
Sorry, that's demonstrably UNtrue. Not only have I had people explicitly tell me that, but you can see it pretty much every time some room temperature IQ thug gets drilled by somebody he was trying to rob, rape or murder. Like clockwork, the mutant family is there to proclaim, "He/she didn't have to kill my baby! He didn't mean it!/They could have shot to wound!/etc., etc., etc."

Yes Virginia, there ARE people who:

  • think it's better for you do be maimed or die than to harm an assailant.
  • think their three time loser, violent felon relative, in the act of robbery, rape or murder (while on probation for armed robbery) has a greater right to live than their victim.

Those people really DO exist. It's just that in the REAL United States, you don't have to pay them any mind. You sure don't have to die for THEIR degenerate "beliefs".

Perhaps I should have stated, " No one reasonable expects you not to defend yourself ". That ok for you Shirley?

cmort, what you were saying- 'why did you have to shoot my baby..' stuff like that for these sweet little choirboys who 'just msade a mistake..' that is what has worried me about evevn being cleared by a prosecutor, stating "He had a right to kill this personn..' because Ayoob has written several times about the shooter then being sued. I think we've been over this on another thread so won't go on- but Ayoob had said it's sometimes better to go totrial- bear that expense- because then- IN SOME STATES- you can't be sued in civil court.
Sorry for the repeat, but it does bother me sometimes. In our area there are more and more home invasions, armed robberies- and I really try and think these things true. Now if I could only afford a consultation with a really good local lawyer. Take care.

"Don't go somewhere if you think you have to go armed. Go elsewhere or come back later when it is safer".

Perhaps we can contact the thugs for their schedule.

Semperfi71 was spot on w/his post. During my 30 yr. LEO days I had to use my duty weapon to defend myself and I can think of nothing to recommend this experience to anyone. These instances were legally and morally justified because I was left w/no other choice in each case.

While I still carry in retirement using my EDC would be an absolute last resort. I don't confront anyone and steer clear of trouble. If someone were to try and steal something I owned I would not use a gun to stop them (you don't get the death penalty for larceny) unless I was physically attacked.

Mass Ayoob's "Greatst Extreme" while dated, is a must read for anyone legally carrying.

...Our society has gotten too ramped up over "crime", "concealed carry", and "self-defense". I think that sometimes the fears are outweighing the actual risks.

I would agree with that except for the word "fears." I am fortunate in that where I live, I am not particularly afraid of anything, most of the time, but I do most definitely recognize the hyperbole the MSM brings to this topic. It must be a big money-maker for them. But what really concerns me is that I believe they intend eventually to use the subjects of self-defense and concealed carry of weapons by ordinary citizens to unhinge our 2nd Amendment rights. To the extent that we unwittingly "cooperate" with that program (i.e., the hyperbole) in any way, we are helping to insure their success.

Great Post! I am a Criminal Defense Lawyer and former prosecutor in a chicago collar county. Self-Defense does apply in Illinois. Although NO-ONE, and I mean NO-ONE (other than the mayor's and alderman's bodyguards) can legally carry in Illinois.

The prosecutor in the zimmerman case should be disbarred.

The first prosecutor who reviewed all the evidence from an objective viewpoint saw a clear-cut case of self defense backed by physical injuries to zimmerman and eyewitness accounts, all of which corroborrated zimmerman's account.

But, if I was in that situation I'm not sure what I would do. I was taught a japanese tradition of Miyamato Musashi to:
"Defeat your enemy before he can even think to oppose you."

The mind is the greatest weapon we possess. Confuse, scare, disorient, surprise. Anything to extract yourself from dangerous situations. It seems as though Zim was in the process of getting the **** kicked out of him and his only option was deadly force to stop deadly force from killing him.

After the first punch I would have tried to run, but if not possible I would immediate start acting absolutely bleeping crazy; I mean really crazy. People tend to back off when they think someone is unballanced, unpredictable. If I couldn't do that I'd use an old trick I learned froma teacher. They also used this (in part) towards the end of "Get Smart." Clinch him in and kiss him right on the lips. He will react by jumping back. Then add witha wink "Hey baby, I've got AIDS, let's ****. It works. Mis-direct them.

Here's to all our stories and comments. May the higher power we believe in give us a clear head and a stable hand to keep ourselves and others safe and to never be put into a situation where our force is needed. Carry safe, carry smart, and carry often.

I understand that some one peeping through your window or a "Peeping Tom" can be disturbing but it is not a reason to kill them with a gun now you might catch them in the act and confront them with a gun but concealed and ask them what the hell are they doing looking into your home. They might be sick individuals that need some sort of mental help not a dose of lead.

Of course with age comes wisdom most of the time and it is incidents like this that prepare you to make the best decision for the circumstances. In 47 years I have yet to have to pull or use any of my weapons although when younger I came close so with maturity I do not look for trouble nor go to places where it might happen.

I go to work and do my job and get along with my co-workers but I carry daily and all my co-workers know it (and some are glad that I do and others who don't really care one way or the other).

By the way we are both the same age and in 1977 I was in the U.S. Navy and my youngest daughter was born the next year and she is now 34 years old. Boy I hate getting older, but I must be doing something right to make it to 59.

I think the thing in florida has been warped by the media so bad that only 2 people know what happened.. and one of them happens to be dead, but very good post!

If somebody puts you in immediate and reasonable fear of life and limb, they've made a choice, and probably an irreversible one. Don't risk your own life by second guessing that choice. Do what you have to do to stay alive. I GUARANTEE you that your assailant hasn't the SLIGHTEST concern regarding YOUR life and well being. If he did, he wouldn't BE your ASSAILANT.
Couldnt have said it better.
Your life is always more valuable than the life of the person attacking you. If they have a gun or a pointy stick it does not matter, they are trying to harm you. Their well being should not even be on your mind until the situation is safe for you.
