Sell me on a new state

Too many dental floss tycoons?
Haha!
I’m hoping this a Frank Zappa reference!

I might be movin' to Montana soon
Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss
Raisin' it up
Waxin’ it down
In a little white box
I can sell uptown

Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon
(yes I am)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a mennil-toss flykune

I moved from Maine to Arizona 1 year ago Saturday. From my front patio I have views of the Whetstone mountains, from the back is the Dragoons, both ranges run about 8000' at the peaks. My utilities, electricity and natural gas run about $130 monthly. In Maine just my light bill was more then that plus in the winter months oil ran about $500 monthly. Property taxes are half what they were in Maine. No black flies, mosquitos or ticks, you can actually enjoy the outdoors. In Maine just walking from my house to my car it was not unusual to find a tick on board. Beautiful weather, rode my motorcycles all winter. Very gun friendly.

Stay out of Maine. An influx of New American Voters about decade ago has turned the state reliably blue and it's getting worse. We now have a 3 day waiting period working it's way through the courts. Anti-gun groups target Maine because we're trending Democrat.

Vacation here in the summer. Do not make the regrettable mistake of moving here.

I’ll add this. My wife lived in London KY for a few years in early 2000s. We explored WV, TN, and KY. Thought hard about NC and GA. She did not want to live somewhere again that was basically an exit off the interstate with a Walmart, Waffle House and Applebees. We wanted 3 seasons. We’ll be in FL for winters. Although we’ll live on top of a mountain in WV we are 15 mi from all the “ culture” she wants. Fine dinning, shopping, etc. Take your time and look around. The exploration is half the fun.

Tax wise, western TN isn’t bad if you are OK calling the Appalachians mountains. (I am…). I’m in Ga, and generally if you arrive without a gun, someone will loan you one.

Cost of living in both states is quite low.
I was going to say east Tennessee. Around Knoxville. Smokey mountains. They get snow in the valley but winters are not harsh. Summers are better than here in Texas. Lots of Hydropower. Rivers, lakes.

Come to the Commonwealth of PA. We have mountains, don't have hurricanes, gun laws are decent and they don't tax your retirement income. When I moved back to PA from Maryland the first two things I did was to buy 30 round magazines for my AR-15 and apply for a carry permit.

PA would be my destination. The Gettysburg/Carlilsle area.

To add, healthcare is most important as you age, so I’m staying right where I am for the great healthcare system I have ever experienced. All of it close by, no need to travel hours to get it, when seconds count.

Libtards Target ME because of our ridiculously easy citizen initiative laws, poor, and can be bought off easy. The influx of New American Voters is not the only problem. We have been producing our own crop of ignorant lay abouts for decades. Starting with the "get back to the earth" hippie movement in the 60
"If you could buy a Gray Hound bus ticket with food stamps, we would all be out of here" Tim Sample.

Thread starter lihpster: Unless your absolutely positive that you are free of any, even the smallest traces of liberalism, stay where you are and not infect the "New Home" ;) ha, ha, ha, Good luck and Gods speed.

There's room in Texas for you. Gotta live pretty far west to have easy access to mountains but Central Texas has the Hill Country which provides some of the same benefits as mountains and is generally easier on old folks like me. I became a Texan in 1991 and they've not manufactured sufficient dynamite to blast me outa here. Bryan

oh, you just have to come to New York. Mind you I didn't say to live, just so you can maybe better appreciate where you currently are. That said, I wish I had the option of getting back to the LaFollette, Tn. area, you'd like that I think.....

My wife is never going to leave Colorado, so I'm never going to leave Colorado.

Our plan is to move to the plains of Eastern Colorado and stay out of the Cities unless it's absolutely necessary

If I got to pick I would say somewhere in Eastern Wyoming. North or South Dakota would be my second choice.

Sadly, Oregon is following Washington state, which is trying to challenge California in the political arena. So, I too, am trying to convince my wife that we need to relocate to Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or maybe South Dakota. Idaho makes the most sense for us as Lewiston is less than 3 hours from our current residence and where our 3 sons reside. Sadly, at our advanced age, a move will be challenging. Having lived 68 of my 70 years in Washington, I would love to have stayed, but the tyrannical state government has pushed me over the edge. The cancer of west side progressives have passed unconstitutional and immoral laws that I refuse to support with my tax dollars. Wish me luck on convincing my wife of 43 years…

I am 50/50 on Colorado. Lived in CO since 68. I was a little squab back then. Colorado has a little of everything. Plains, mountains, deserts, and awesome lakes. As was already posted, things here are a little more on the blue side. We could stand to have gun toting defectors from the left coast here to, at the very least, make us purple again.

We get some big storms here but we also have many days of sun. People think we are crazy when it just snowed and we are wearing shorts then next day. Anything above 40 is balmy during the winter. There have been days when there is 6 inches of snow on the ground one day and the next it is all melted.

There are some good gun ranges around but the last session out of the state house put a bill through that has attacked the 2A. I don't think it will pass muster with the Supreemes though. I am happy to welcome gun toting transplants from other states. Hunting is great here. If it flies or runs on all 4s you can hunt it. Fishing is second to none. We have some of the best trout fishing in the country. Lake fishing is pretty good also.

I too have been pondering where to hang up my spurs but, dang to I love CO. So does the +1. We may just have to move from the front range to the back side of the state.

I live 7 miles from the ID border as the crow flies up in the hills north of Spokane. But Northern ID seems to be mostly either big family-held spreads, expensive homes meant for empty nesters and retirees, or the usual assortment of manufactured homes and junky stick built jobs seen throughout most of rural America. So bring your pile of money as there's no middle ground I can find. I'm also not sure the politics of the state will remain good; it might go the way of Colorado in 20 years.

Montana east of the Divide and pretty much all of Wyoming get stupid cold in the winter. Even western MT gets really cold. Lots of people move there and move right back out in a few years. Nature does not conform to your wishes.

Utah is gorgeous and there are billboards for full auto rental shooting ranges right on the interstate south of SLC. St. George is exploding with growth. I've considered it as an empty nest destination even if it would make seeing family really hard.

A friend just retired to the northern foothills of the Ozarks south of Springfield, MO. The area looks gorgeous, and NW AR actually has a lot going on, but it seems to be the most expensive part of the state by a longshot.

As I get older, I find that access to high quality health care is more important than trying to save a little on taxes.
John has a great point.

What younger people don’t think about is eventually you might be bedridden or seriously disabled.

In our youth we wanted to be close to hunting grounds, shooting ranges and horseback trails.

Now I have outlived all my hunting, shooting and riding buddies. Occasionally I go to the Indoor Range.

My wife and I are the caregiver for each other. We have everything paid off and we are in a good place. The grass doesn’t get any greener with another move.

Indiana. No carry permit required, but lifetime available if you want it. Reciprocity with almost all states in the area other than the P.R.I. I am 20 minutes outside a major city, so close to major hospitals, airport, pretty much anything I want, and in the other direction places to shoot and hunt. Low cost of living, very gun friendly, I like it here. And nope, I was not born here.

I have 2 Urgent care centers and a full service hospital with a heliport and chopper within 5 minutes of the house, two multi story medical buildings with doc offices, radiology, dialysis, nearly anything other than an MRI machine within 10 minutes. Two more hospitals under 20 miles away before going in to the city.

I’m stayin’.

I agree with you on the issue of health care. Happily, it is available where you would want to be in PA. My extended family and I have been the benificiaries of it.
