I have what maybe a silly question, but what would be the the 3rd gen equivalent to the SD9VE? I guess another way to say it is if S&W were to replace the SD9VE(just the SD9VE not the whole lineup) with a 3rd gen auto. What model would replace it?

Referring to an S & W "3rd gen auto" brings to mind a metal frame pistol, usually with a four-digit model number. if you simply mean the Sigma (1st generation) evolving into the SD9 (2nd) and what would come after that, I could foresee the same basic gun with a different trigger (if possible given budget constraints) and cosmetics as a follow on.

Good question!
In my opinion, that would be the Model 5943TSW.
9mm; 4 inch stainless slide and barrel; double stack magazine; double action only; accessory rail; are all things they have in common.
The difference is the 5943TSW has an aluminum alloy frame whereas the SD9VE has a polymer frame.
While their operating systems and designs are dissimilar, their general features are very much alike.

Nice John, a solid way to argue based on features. However, I think I would take a different angle and say that the SD9VE was typical of polymer striker fire guns and was simply meant to be absolutely low in price.

Based on price and it's intended role of being "lowest cost while still quality enough to work", I would suggest the closest 3rd Gen would be the S&W 910.

If op meat the next gen, then the SW99 might fill the bill.

I agree with the 910 being the closest metal pistol equivalent of the SD9, but in the real world the ship of S & W 3rd generation production appears to have sailed into the sunset :(.

I had considered the model 910 because of its "value" placement in the product line, but rejected it because too many features were different.

However if S&W had offered the model 910 in DAO with an accessory rail and a stainless slide and barrel, then I would agree.

Thanks for the great answers. I'm going to rephrase the question. Let's say its the 90's so the SD9VE has not been made yet, so if I was going a S&W semi auto(Metal frame), What model would I get?

Again, I'll go with S&W 910. If it was the early to mid-90's and polymer striker fire guns were not yet "the standard", then a budget DA/SA with an aluminum frame from S&W would be the 910. Hi-cap, standard items (of the day) with no extra cost frill such as cutting edge sights or "not yet popular" tactical rails.

BTW, welcome to the forum, Homey and congratulations!
Your rephrased question is even more vague and ambiguous than your original question.

In the 1990s, S&W produced a bewildering (to most people) array of metal framed, semi-automatic, center fire pistols in calibers 9mm; 40s&w; 45acp; and 10mm not to mention 356tsw and 38wc.

As previously stated, the closest to the SD9VE in features is the 5943TSW.
The closest in price point would be the 910.

What specifically do you hope to achieve?
Knowing that will make your question much easier to answer.

John
