I have every day sent this letter, I change the name on the top, but this letter has gone to congress, VP Biden, Pres. Obama, state reps, and who ever I can send it to
Dear Gov. Hickenlooper,
I am writing this letter to express my view on gun control. I am a firm believer in my second amendment right to "Keep and Bear Arms". I believe that every law abiding citizen has the right to own firearms. I understand everyone's reaction to Sandy Hook, and trust me there is one crime that I believe to be inexcusable and that is any crime against children. I feel that everyone's reaction to Sandy Hook and other shootings are endangering our rights as Americans. I hear politicians say that they support the second amendment but support the Assault Weapons Ban, I find it hard to believe that anyone would both support and oppose the Second Amendment. In the second amendment it says nothing about having the right to own guns for the purpose of hunting and sport shooting, it says we have the right to keep and bear arms for the protection of ourselves and our nation from anyone who would infringe upon it, up to and including our own government. Limits on the capacity of a magazine is a joke, if I have one 30 round magazine or three ten round magazines make zero difference. I feel it is a "knee-jerk" reaction that would have no effect. The time that it takes to re load a magazine is 10ths of a second, so there is no way that a capacity ban would have any effect. Do not ban guns based on looks, there are too many false facts coming from politicians and the media. Speak from honest, proven facts and not hear say. I would support any law that keeps guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally incompetent, however reject any law that keeps guns out of the hands of good, honest, law abiding Americans.
Not one law abiding gun owner ever committed a crime ever in history. If criminals were to follow laws, there would be no crime and new bans on our second amendment right only effects law abiding citizens. Again, the second amendment is not about hunting, shooting sports or anything other than the people having the right to defend them selves. I ask that you do not take away our right to defend ourselves. Support our Second Amendment and I ask that you do not consider any laws that would affect law abiding people. I feel there are very strong views on both sides of the issue. Lets all work together to find and fix the real issue and not use "knee jerk" reactions to strip the rights of law abiding people. Let's be real and use all this energy on gun control to fix the things that would have true effect on the issues at hand. Do not turn your back on our rights. Do not turn your back on America.
"False is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousand real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience; that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils except destruction. The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes." Cesare Beccaria, as quoted by Thomas Jefferson's Commonplace book
