Sent my 15-22 back today because it came with a broken mag release.

Shortly after I unpacked my rifle I noticed the mag release bar on the left side of the rifle was split in half (when the pin was pressed in I'm guessing). So I got an RMA from S&W and I just sent it off today.

I wrote up a polite letter explaining that I too work in the customer service industry and I am not permitted to "screw up" my job depends on my clients being satisfied. And that I can't see how this made it past Q-A with a broken part on it... And I also went on to say "I understand you are no longer sending back 2 free magazines as a "Good Will Gesture" but I sure would appreciate it if you did...

Here is a closeup of the mag release before it completely failed. Notice the fracture at the top?

After inserting and removing the mag a few times the whole arm split off the pin rendering the firearm useless. And the part was made of garbage pot metal JUST like most Airsoft components!

Why not take it back to the selling dealer?

I've not pulled this part and have no spare, but it sure looks like a standard M16 magazine catch. Anyone?

I know it's 1/3" forward in the lower receiver but appears to be the same part and the slot in the magazine is the same size. Would make sense to use a standard rather than proprietary part.

I don't disagree, but I am not going to be the one to replace a part on a $500 gun that came broken. Let them replace it, that's why I bought a new gun and not a used one...

I may very well just yank out the replacement and put in a better quality Ambi-Catch.

A standard M16 magazine catch does work with it. I bought one and painted it FDE to match the rest of my setup. If anything happens and i have to ship the gun to S&W, I will just put the original parts back on it.

I can't get over the prices for ambi mag release.. $89 dollars? You gotta be kidding me! Fricken VLTOR Flash Hider is only $55 and change, and they want near a benjamin for a stinkin mag release? Stock style replacements from Olympic and DPMS are both under $10.00.

WOW....

Yep, same design as the standard AR-15 mag catch. I've upgraded mine to a Norgon Ambi-catch

I also had an issue after a return from S&W and wrote them an email politely asking for the 2 mags I didn't get like everyone else. I think I wrote to "Paul G." and he said they would send me 2. Hopefully they send them to you also.

Quality control

I have an M&p 15 22 works great (2500 rounds)my problem was with a my new 617. had to send it back because the barrel was 1/16" overtorqued (I wondered how this got past quality control) when I got the gun back (16 days) they had to put a new frame on it. Also noticed they chamfered the charge holes an the trigger is smooth as silk.I was impressed with the quick turn around and the gun is working great.I had to send my 970 taurus back they fixed it well but it was gone four months S&W's service has been very good so far.

ive had good luck with smith also... but if someone had my gun for 4 months i would have done drove to their facility and i assure you i would have left with a new gun... and they would have never held anyone elses that long for fear of me coming back... sorry get alittle rattle when people mess with my toys... lol
