serial number help

I have inherited (2) s&w 38 revolvers. The serial numbers are ANR5614 and 25J905. Can you tell me what models these are and when were they manufactured?

It really would be helpful if you spent a little more time looking over your 38's and reporting any other identifying engraving - there is more then just a Serial Number on each of your puppies.

Can't get pics right now but here's a description. ANR5614 is marked 38SPL, five shot, and 2" or 2/12" barrel, and stainless. I don't know when my Dad obtained it, I believe sometime in the mid to late 80's. The other (25J905) is the same, but blued, and he received it as a gift in the early 70's. Looking at other pics I think they're model 36 but I could be wrong. Hope someone can help.

If you flop open the cylinder the model number (and dash number if available) should be right there.

Thanks hittman77! The stainless is a model 60, no dash number. I'll check the blued one later. I called Smith and Wesson to get a mfg date but their office is closed until 8-10-12.

The Model 60 is also known as a stainless steel Chief Special. It is a "J" frame revolver. Later on, it was made in .357 Magnum caliber.

Photos are always helpful to help identify as S&W made many different revolvers in multiple configurations.
