I've noticed in a lot pics of firearms posted in forums and on social media have the serial # covered or its blurred out. What are the major concerns associated with having people see the serial # of your firearms? I can understand why owners who have unregistered weapons would not want the "government" to know, but are there other reasons? TIA

The theory is someone could claim the gun is stolen from them, based on knowing the complete serial number. That said I know of no such claims being successful, or even attempted. Probably more difficult to claim with a national computerized database of stolen guns.

Yes, the “government keeping track of serial numbers” theory too.

The usual reason for posting a serial number is to estimate the age of a gun. For this reason 1234xx suffices as much as posting the full number, so no problem if you don’t give all the digits. Or if you do. :)

Alright so what's the big deal...who wants my Social Security Number...how about my bank account number...maybe my drivers license? Posting ANY personal info on the internet just isn't good business

This subject is discussed and debated often on gun forums. I tend to agree with Real Old Navy when he said "Posting ANY personal info on the internet just isn't good business" but I also very much agree with murphydog that part of the serial number is VERY relevant when we discuss guns, so showing or relaying the first half and XX'ing the last 2 or 3 digits is definitely my way of handling the serial number.

I've found in this conversation that some will NEVER be convinced and they get irrationally defensive when it is discussed and they dare you to show citations of anything that has ever happened due to a posted serial number.

For those folks and for anyone so interested, I offer this link to a discussion on another forum:

Why not use your real name instead of an alias?

I agree that a serial number is useful in dating/valuing a gun. However, beyond that, it's superfluous.

I've posted pics both with serials and redacted serials. In the end I'm not that paranoid over it. The "Gov't" already knows what I have and where to find me if needed.

I'm one of those people who blurs out the S/N, and I can't state my reasons any better than Real Old Navy did.
