While browsing the Gunbroker site today, I came across a .22LR pistol made by Sheridan Products the company that made pellet guns. It is called a Knocabout. I've never heard them making any actual pistols that fired rounds like .22LR with gunpowder. Anyone ever own one of these? Sounds interesting and it being a single shot pistol, it may be just what I need to get the grandkids shooting safely.

I remember them from the 50s, never owned or fired one. They used to be advertised in outdoor magazines. I have seen a few at gun shows. I suppose the market was mainly campers, hikers, fisherman, etc. who wanted a cheap no-frills pistol "just in case". No idea of what are worth today, but they are scarce, and one LNIB would probably bring a pretty good price.

New to me! Never knew the Sheridan made them. Had the pellet gun though. Packed a good punch with 8 pumps.

Yes, these were well-advertised in gun magazines in the '50s, maybe '60s, but I've yet to see one.

My sisters husband bought one about 1954, they were single shots I remember shooting it some, it was nicely blued and well made. Jeff

My first handgun was a Sheridan Knockabout that I talked my Dad into buying for me for Christmas 1957 as I recall. Retail was $19.95 I believe. I still own it but haven't shot it in probably 50+ years. I had the only .22 case-head failure in it that I have ever seen, but it did quite a bit of damage to the gun! The .22 L.R. is nothing to joke about! I was able to pretty well repair it except for the left grip that was broken in the event.

No, the Knockabout isn't for sale at any price, so don't even ask!

The Knock about was contemporary with the Whitney Wolverine that didn't cost a lot more, $29.95 at the time as I recall. Always wanted a Wolverine, but never had a chance and the money at the same time! Sound familiar?

An original 1950s Whitney Wolverine .22 is today a very worthwhile find. It has that unique "Ray Gun" appearance. There was an unsuccessful attempt to resurrect the Wolverine around 10 or so years ago. I don't know why it failed. Finding one of those would also be very worthwhile.

I remember them, but have never owned one. A picture for those who've not seen one:

The Sheridan was an interesting little gun. I still see them occasionally at the gun shows around here. The idea of an inexpensive single shot hung on for a while in the 50's and early 60's. Savage made one that looked like a Colt revolver but the cylinder and barrel swung out to load. The toy company Whammo made one styled like a semi auto and there were some foreign made copies of the old Stevens break opens around for a while.

I had examples of all of them go through the store years ago but the only one I actually took out and shot was the Stevens look alike. Wish now I'd tried some of the others, the Knocabout was certainly a solid feeling little gun

Thanks for the pic! Never saw one either. Sure was a nice price even back then! My old Sheridan 5 MM pellet gun ran me $33 back in 65. Love the days when prices didn't triple 3 times over.
