I know Sherrif Joe has an "amen corner" here, but the fact of the matter is that he's a self-promoting blowhard, a not particularly effective law enforcer, and an outright menace to his prisoners and others. On his watch, the county has settled a number of wrongful death claims against him and his detention officers, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. He's been an equal-opportunity abuser of his prisoners, packing them into concentration camp style "tent cities" in the same weather conditions that sends do-gooders out to bring bottled water and offer shelter to homeless people. (And, don't overlook the fact many of the people he incarcerates are only charged, not convicted of any crimes, and may be too hapless, inept, stupid, or just plain destitute to make bail, and so languish in Sherrif Joe's camps.) He raids janitorial contractors and etc., rounding up the lowest-hanging fruit of the illegals, while not much molesting the coyotes, drug runners, kidnappers, and other serious illegal-alien criminals. He's squandered millions of public dollars in bogus investigations and charges against the county supervisors, who've tried to rein him in, and so far has been shown up for the fraudulent allegations he's brought. Meanwhile, last I looked, while Joe's been huffing and puffing in front of the cameras, there are still some 40,000 unserved criminal warrants in the county. While he's been rounding up a very small handful of illegals (like dozens, not thousands), rapists, murderers, thieves, and genuinely bad actors are running around free because he's too busy promoting his tough-on- crime persona. He's not a Buford Pusser figure, he's more like Richard Daley or Mayor Bloomberg, a tinpot politician advancing a personal agenda, at the expense of doing his job in the public interest. With any luck, he'll not advance politically beyond his current provincial dynasty. He's been very successful at promoting his image, but he's been a failure as a sheriff, and I wouldn't want him in any more important office. I'm puzzled that he's so popular among groups like this forum's members, who are otherwise mostly zealous proponents of protecting and defending our personal liberties.
Well what do you know --- while I was typing this post, Chickenfried was posting a link that corroborates much of what I just said --- thanks
