Sheriffs upset they were barred from House gallery Tuesday

It's not looking good for NM firearms laws as a certain political party took over both sides of the legislature, the governor's seat and "voted to ban all weapons from the House gallery for all joint sessions of the legislature" because of the "threat" from mass shootings. That includes ALL LE who aren't State Police and the Sergeant at Arms. The Sheriffs were made to watch the State of the State address, from the new Governor, in another room, on TV, and not from the floor where they usually are. Yeah, it's not looking good!

Not sure why police expect to be treated differently than the general public.

Wow, just wow.

They don't want nor do they expect to be treated different from the general public. It's the general public that expect them to be different.
The general public expect them to be there when the general public needs them. After all there isn't an emergency number to call the general public for help.

Maybe because they are the ones who risk their lives standing between the public and evil that walks out there.
Sometimes. And sometimes police articulate that they shoot just in case their lives are at risk because their safety is primary.

Policing is an important job. But it isn't the most dangerous job or the most important job. It is a job - voluntary, decently paid and well supported.

There is a law about who can be armed in the legislature. If I can't be armed in the legislature, why should a sheriff be armed when it isn't his jurisdiction? There are two other LE organizations that have it covered.

I just don't get the outrage, other than it being gun outrage.

It would be interesting to know how many House members are carrying. Firearms are prohibited in the Capitol complex where I reside, but I know some of the lawmakers carry despite the ban.
I, prior to my retirement, negotiated contracts with the State. One day I advised them that to be in compliance with the law (that they passed), several changes would be necessary. I was told point blank "We make the laws here. Do not confuse that with us following them. No changes will be made." That kinda soured me on the lawmakers who feel that they are above the law.

A fundamental principle of American law is that the government has no power or authority other than what is delegated by the people. Simply put, the people cannot delegate an authority they do not have.

LEO's while on duty are charged with certain responsibilities and granted the authority to carry out those responsibilities. LEO's not on duty, or not within their own limited jurisdiction, are nothing more than citizens, having no special or particular rights, duties, or responsibilities beyond those of the citizen.

Legislators who enact laws while exempting themselves from complying with said laws are beneath contempt.

Unfortunately, too many people who are given an inch tend to think of themselves as rulers.

Did anyone bother to tell them of any change in the weapons policy?

The local media mentioned the vote/rule change about a week or so ago. The Sheriffs found out it also applied to them when they tried to enter the House gallery.

The point about my post is that we now have a bunch of newly elected rabid anti-gun people in the state legislature, the governor along with a mayor and majority of the city council where i live from one party. The opposition party, had one chamber of the house and the mayors office had vetoed a lot these bills. The party now in power, has, for all intents and purposes, no opposition in getting these bills to a governor who is willing to sign them.

The party now in power is using "gun violence" to justify further restrictions, when, in fact, it's the sanctuary cities and catch and release policies along with everything associated with the drug trade that are the main causes.

Not quite. I wish I had the same benefit of concealed carry in all 50 states that off duty or retired LEOs have.

If you don’t like the rules that apply differently to law enforcement officers. All you have to do is quit your high paying cushy job and do a career in law enforcement. Its glamorous you work nights and days.Sometimes in the same week. You meet and deal with people who threaten to harm you and your loved ones. You have to remember all the faces they only have to remember one.And you do it because it’s a calling not a job.And maybe someday you retire to a lousy pension and you listen to the politicians decide to cut your pension and benefits. That way the can tell The voters that they are saving them money.Because the only time they care about cops or their families is when the latest police funeral is going by .Then a week later they don’t know the dead officers name.

This topic barely makes the cut for being within the purpose of this forum as stated here-

It is after the fact. It is merely a news item. It would have been nice to hear about it before it passed, when opposition could have been mounted.
