I've been looking at a 380EZ as a possible carry gun, something to keep my Glock 42 company.
here's the thing- a S&W M&P 380EX is a hammer(enclosed) fired single action(SA) semi auto pistol. like the 1911(also a hammer fired SA pistol), the 380EZ has an optional thumb safety and a grip safety. also comes in a model without thumb safety.
is there anybody here who would carry a 1911 without a thumb safety? I mean cocked but not locked?

The actions are entirely different. The S&W is a striker fired gun DESIGNED to be carried without a safety. (There are already several built-in.) The fact that you can get it with a safety is so the gun can be sold in jurisdictions that REQUIRE it... not because it needs to be there. (And some folks don't feel safe with a gun unless they have something visual to confirm that the gun is safe.)

The 1911, on the other hand, is designed to be carried Cocked and Locked and it's safety is its primary safety. Without that one you're a negligent discharge waiting to happen.

With the 1911 you have to train to wipe it to off when you draw and you may have to train to hold it down WHILE you fire else it can turn itself back on causing no bang on it the next trigger pull. Nothing wrong with that, but it's more training you have to do...

The M&P Shield 380 EZ and M&P 22 Compact are hammer fired unlike the other M&Ps

I've carried 1911's daily for years on end. If you have an ambi safety there are going to be times the safety gets knocked to off. If the trigger is covered it's not a problem. Holstering with no thumb safety is no different than a striker fired gun without a thumb safety, you have to be sure nothing gets in the trigger guard (a necessary practice regardless of safeties).
I also carried a G-34 daily with a 2lb trigger for a couple of years. No issues there either. I shot in competition weekly during that time.

I bought the EZ for my wife and she was also an avid 1911 and Glock shooter, she picked the model without the thumb safety.
