Shield 9 Mag Release Button Problem

Why the hell is the mag release button metal on the Shield? I haven't shot my Shield in a while as I tend to carry most of the time and tonight I thought I would do some dry firing with it and give it a good look over. I had to put some major force on the mag release button before I could drop the mag. It had been corroded / rusted so bad it wouldn't move without me wrenching on it. After finally getting it to drop the mag I popped it out and touched it with a magnet. Sure enough it stuck. I had to soak it in some M-Pro 7 for a while and use a scraper and wire brush to get it cleaned. What reason does S&W have for making it metal versus polymer like on all of my other M&P's? I don't get it.

I don't know the answer to your question. But I'd guess it was either:

A. Metal is cheaper than polymer. Or,

B. Polymer didn't work.

I know the older mag releases on the M&Ps where 100% polymer, but the new one's have a metal insert. The 9mm Shield I had, both of my FS 9mm and 9c have a metal tab surrounded by polymer.

It kind freaked me out as it took me a couple of minutes before I could get the mag to drop. I live in Texas and it has been its normal hot as hell lately so I am sweating onto the grip. My Crossbreed micro tuck holster doesn't cover that portion of the gun. I will have to remember to check it frequently from now on. Good thing I discovered this way versus during a time I might have really needed it.

Maybe, maybe not but could have something to do w/notorious mag drop syndrome... as a fix? My first Shield had that problem. Got it fixed, then sold it. A few weeks ago bought another but no unwanted mag drop.

I had a gun that had a plastic mag release button. It riding on the metal mag was not good at all. The mag cut a groove in the plastic causing the mag to drop out when fired! I replaced it with a metal one. Problem solved!

As for your holster not covering what you need covered, I would fix that situation right now. Sweat and guns do not generally do well together.

I would rather have a metal mag release used with a metal magazine than a polymer one. I think the wear of polymer against steel would become a problem.

I've tried a few other holsters with my Shield and the Crossbreed is by far the best one I have used. The size of the minituck is perfect for the Shield. It already has the combat cut in the leather which is why most of the grip and the mag release button are exposed.

+1 I agree, I posted a thread just a few days ago on how my release would not return to normal position so I couldn't reinsert a new mag...sweat was the issue. After looking back at it, only about four days from the last clean to when I noticed the problem. Because it happen so fast, bottom line for me is I will check to make sure everything is functional before putting it on my side, especially in this Florida heat.
