I Have a Shield .40 and hope to buy a 9mm conversion barrel at some point, (if available).

I emailed Storm Lake the other day. They said that "do not know if we will manufacture barrels for that model yet." But they do have a email list if something does come available. Im asking for help from everyone that might consider buying one. To email Storm Lake and help show an interest in their barrels.
Thanks Guys!!

Storm Lake is keeping a list as well. KKM indicated that they have no plans to make barrels for the Shield.

Probably be better to get S&W manufactured Shield 9mm barrel. Their compact barrels work great in the M&P compacts and will probably be a lot cheaper.

Most likely, the barrel hood that fits into the breechface will be smaller on the S&W 9mm barrel than the 40 S&W barrel. The aftermarket barrels are "conversions" that keep the barrel profile and dimensions of the 40 S&W barrel - but chamber it for the 9mm cartridge.

M&P Conversion Barrel

The 9mm barrel may fit just fine. I know I bought one for my 40FS and the barrel hoods appear to be the same size. Further, it shoots just fine with the 9mm S&W barrel; quite accurate and fully reliable.

Yeah. I have absolute reliability firing 9mm in my .40 FS using a stock 9mm barrel and mags. If the Shield is just a small version I would think it would work with them also. In this case the word "conversion" simply translates to "pay an extra hundred".

Same results for the M&P compact. S&W 9mm barrel fits the 40 compact, shoots great and completely reliable. Plenty of threads on this issue. Your choice. S&W barrel half the price and made by S&W.

The barrel hood on the 40 is slightly larger then the 9. My 9 barrel fits in the .40 with a little slop. The .40 barrel won't fit in the 9

I am looking into buying a factory 9mm barrel and hopefully some mags and giving it a try, my 357 barrels work on both my 40C and 40 fullsize so with the Shield it should be the same except you would want the proper magazine for the 9mm barrel.

Good luck. S&W has no plans to sell 9mm barrels to the public. Can only get if you have warranty issue, and send in pistol.

Just keep checking different suppliers like Midway, Brownells, etc. S&W does sell barrels to these type companies, who in turn sell them to the public. Several forum members were able to get barrels from Guns & Gear Outlet, phone 413 786-0100. It seems like Smith will sell a quantity of barrels to these companies, and then stop selling. A month or two later, they sell more and stop again.

The stock barrels work great for the 40 to 9mm swap. There is only one difference between the 9mm and 40 barrels, other than bore diameter. The tang at the top rear of the 9mm barrel is slightly more narrow than the tang on the 40 barrel. This causes a slight amount extra side to side barrel play, when using the stock 9mm barrel in a 40 slide. I use a stock 9mm barrel in my Shield 40. This barrel has no effect on the operation or accuracy of the gun. If you didn't see the Shield 40 engraving on the slide, you couldn't tell it was a conversion. Storm Lake sells exact conversion barrels, that do not have the extra side play, but you end up paying double, for their barrels, with no difference in operation. Since Storm Lake is a specialty barrel manufacturer, your going to pay for their "custom" barrel.

I havent bc i dont know of anyone w a 9mm shield in the area. Its alot of money to buy a mag and barrel hoping that it will work

Do a search on here and the web in general. Any guys have done it with 100% success rate from what I've read so far. Matter fact haven't read of anyone thats done it and ha issues when using factory 9 barrel and magazine.

That's funny, because quite a few people here have bought barrels directly from S&W in order to do the 40-to-9 conversion. (FS, C, and Shield)

You have to look at the poster that revived this zombie thread from a year ago.... Back then they weren't available, now they are.

I've only read about trouble with Storm Lake barrels, never heard of a problem with S&W barrels.

If it makes you feel better paying twice as much though, that's your prerogative. ;)

I saw that, but LrrGrr posted his response on the 15th, so I thought he should be informed as to the here and now. :D
