I picked up a Shield in 9mm a few months back for CCW carry. I usually carry a J Frame, but wanted a semi-auto option as well.

I have generally shied away from small autos for carry. Historically the smaller autos for CCW have been finicky, unreliable, and only manufactured in sub 9mm calibers (with the exception of some exotic and very expensive makes). The last bunch of years there has been a tremendous upswing in the manufacture of 9mm small autos for CCW carry. Every major manufacturer makes at least one these days. I figured enough time had passed for the makers to work the bugs out and decided to take the plunge. After much research I settled on the Shield (only because Glock doesn't make a small single stack 9).

I have taken the Shield to the range 4 times. The first 3 times I was focused on some rifle projects I had just completed, and I didn't really focus too much on the Shield. I just ran 20 or so rounds through it to make sure it was reliable and that was that.

Last night I actually spent some time with this little bugger. I ran 70 rounds of mixed 9mm through it. Man am I impressed. At 7 to 15 yards it is super accurate. I had no problem shooting 2" to 3" five-shot groups slow fire. Recoil is very manageable. I find I shoot it as well, maybe even a little better than my Glock 19, though not quite as well as my 17...but close!

I have only used the 7 round mag in the Shield because that is the way I will carry it. I was amazed at how well it handles even without a firm place for my pinky. During 5 shot rapid fire drills the groups opened up a little, but not too much. Handling, even in rapid fire, was exceptional for such a small gun. (I'm sure that would not be the case in .40. Recoil is very sharp with .40 in any size gun, especially little ones, which makes follow up shots much more difficult. That's why I sold all of my 40s long ago. Today's 9mm ammo designed to expand at lower velocities, makes it just as effective as .40)

I now have about 175 rounds through it. It has performed flawlessly with anything I fed it. Zero malfunctions.

Maybe I just shoot this gun very well, but it sure seems extremely accurate for such a small gun. I can't recommend the little Shield highly enough. I'm beyond impressed. I will mix it into my carry rotation with my J Frames. Funny how all my carry guns are S&Ws. I never intended it to be that way, just how things worked out.

Yep, I love mine too and shoot almost as well as my 1911...almost.

What disturbs me though is that neglected 8 round mag that is not getting any love....if it needs a good home....well ya know....:)

It gets plenty of love, it's right in my pocket next to the family jewels when I'm carrying the Shield ;)

Me, too!!

I, too have a Shield... it's my nightstand gun right now, as it's tough for me to C/C here in the heat of the southeast- when I live in jeans & a t-shirt- but I'm moving to Maine, and dressed the way I will be there, it WILL be my C/C gun.
I've installed an Apex carry trigger kit in it- and Trijicon sights... it's a sweet little gun.
Before I bought it, I thought I would buy a Glock 26... but when I held one in my hand, it just didn't FIT me... the trigger was simply in the wrong place! Ended up with the Shield, and love it. Have not had misfire/jam 1 with it.
As a sidenote, the sights on the Shield were a BEAST to remove!!! Broke a sight remover on them!

My experience was just as positive! I got my 9mm Shield last week and was able to shoot it for the first time today. I put 100 rounds through it, plus 20 Federal HST rounds. Not one problem, it operated perfectly. I have three 8-round magazines, my 7-rounder is still in the box stuffed away in a closet.

The Shield is a really nice shooter. I shot a bit to the left. The perceived kick seems pretty similar, in my opinion, to my much larger Glock 19.

I totally don't feel the need to do anything to the trigger on my Shield. It is surprisingly good...not too heavy, breaks clean and crisp, very short and predictable reset. This is coming from a guy who changes all his triggers. All my ARs have Geissele triggers, all my J Frames have trigger jobs and spring kits, all my bench guns have different triggers etc.

I probably will do the night sights at some point though.

Great reviews on the Shield 9mm.I will be recommending one to a friend seeking a reliable pistol.

Believe it or not recoil in my shield 40 was a lot less than i expected very comfortable to shoot. It was a little more than my 9 shield but not bad.
Enjoy your shield and congrats

To me, the Shield's recoil is about the lightest/smoothest of any of the Single-Stack subcompact 9s. I'd equate it to the recoil of a G26 (and the 40's to that of the G27)... Very comfortable to shoot all day. The others all seem to be harsher.
Just my opinion.
Been loving shooting mine for over 2Yrs now.

I shot a couple that belong to friends and quickly decided I had to have one. It's on order from Bud's and should hopefully be here in the next week.

+1 on the positive reviews of the Shield. My Shield 9 is slightly more accurate than my SD40VE and conceals well. Been pocket carrying it all week on vacation in TN.

I, too, found no trouble with the 7-round magazine with no pinky extension. I actually perceived no difference in shooting results between the 7-round magazine and the 8-round magazine.

I was at the range with my shield 9 last night, and saw a distinct difference in the location of my group when using the 7 vs 8. Groups are the same, just hit on centers about 3 inches apart at 7 yards. 8-round center is the better of the 2.

Also, some good news. It got through about 60 rounds with no jams, which had been hounding me, and caused 3 trips back to S&W. I'm crediting a guy at the range, who had me add a tiny bit of grease at 2 points on the barrel. He had the same issue.

I would keep sending it back until it worked only lubing the points it says to in the instruction manual. Mine has never had a single malfunction and I have close to 3000 rounds through it. I honestly think mine would run without any oil... Although I'm not gonna try it.

I don't shoot in a windy desert environment so I run all my semi auto pistols and rifles pretty wet. Reduces wear, keeps things running smooth. I have always been a proponent of heavy lube. (Out of context that last sentence might come across the wrong way :D)

My experience with my new 9mm Shield echoes that of the OP. I shot very accurately with mine with a nice ragged hole at the bull's-eye at 7 and 8.5 yards. The gun is super-reliable and very easy to field strip and clean/lube. I can have my Shield gunstore-clean in minutes.

Qualified with the Shield for CCW a few nights ago. The gun, as always, was 100% reliable. The recoil on the Shield is very very easy to manage in 9mm and I found myself able to very quickly get back on target with it. I think S&W is going to sell a LOT of these superb guns.
