Good Luck,

I'm an M&P fan. Sold my Glock and XDM, once I got the Shield and replaced them with the M&P line. It really depends on what fits your hand. Once you find a gun that fits your hand, you won't want any other brand.
What do you mean? You can find shields for msrp, some times under or very close to msrp all the time. You just have to look. I've personally bought three. First one $475 delivered. Second $412 delivered for my father in law and just picked up another for my wife $475 delivered. Helped two buddies find theirs also both at msrp. Only people who are too lazy to look buy at "hundreds " over msrp or who were dumb enough to pre pay at their local gun shop for one. Of course your going to wait for it they already have your money. S&W hit it out the park with the Shield!
I have an XDs in .45 and a Shield in 9mm. If S&W made the Shield in .45, I'd order one in a minute (don't read that to mean I'd part with the XDs). The XDs is a very nice little pistol, but I like the feel of the Shield. I'm going to have to get a Shield in .40 S&W so I can set it up to convert between .40 and 9mm.
We got 15 of the Xds in 9 and .45 acp and,we also got 20 of the shields in also at the shop so,I took 1 Shield and compared it to the 9mm xds and the trigger on the xds is better made. And,easier to pull compared to the Shield. Shooting, recoil,is about close to the same for both pistols. Now I have 2 9 mms,the Shield and xds to carry.
I've owned an XDS .45 briefly, but didn't care for it. From what I have read, the XDS 9mm is the same pistol just re-calibered to 9mm, so your wife should be able to get a rough idea of how she might like it by handling your XDS .45 (I don't know if the slide would be any easier to rack on the 9mm, if that's an issue for her on the .45; it might be easier on the 9mm.)
Springfield makes good 1911s, but I'm not wild about their XD line. Springfield also has excellent customer service, so that doesn't differentiate the two. Around here, the XDS sells for a lot more than the Shield, so that is a consideration. For me, I prefer the made-in-America Shield. As has been mentioned, she doesn't need to use the thumb safety.
Good luck. I'm gonna fan boy it alittle here, but part of the reason we buy S&W is the customer service. When they announced the Shield it was in stores that day with aftermarket accessories. You cant find a xds9 anywhere ahd probably won't for a while. I hate when a company announces a product and makes you wait. I can't wait to check one out myself.
I was able to handle and look at a XDS in 9mm when the Springfield truck came to an even here. To me the slide felt about the same. The XDS 9mm actually weights more than there XDS 45. I think for a compact 9mm of the same size I like my Shield much better. I had a XD 40 and sold it as the bore axis was higher and was not comfortable shooting it. Looking at a M&P 40C just have to save up a few dollars.
I paid $569 for my XDS. If I add to that $200 plus another $250 then that's $1,019 total...wow! I must be reading that wrong. By the way I will put my 15 yr old Taurus PT 92 up against a Colt or S&W any day for quality, accuracy and reliability. Not saying that for any Taurus...just mine.Yep the Shield is still a rare species to find at the LGS even though its no longer a "new cool" weapon. So there must be a reason the gun is still so sought after. And of course the XDS is pretty readily available. You could stop by a few LGS and one of them usually has one or two hanging out.
When the XDS starts selling as fast as the Shield and becomes as hard to find as the Shield for as long as the Shield has. THEN, i'll believe that just "maybe" Springfield is onto a nice weapon. But in the mean time, comparing a Springfield to Smith is like comparing a Taurus to a Colt.
My little brother some time back sold his XDS for $200 more than he bought it for. A week later I found him a Shield .40 in which he added another $250 or so to the original $200 extra he got off the sell of his XDS. Needless to say he thought that extra $250 he spent out of his pocket for his Shield .40 was the best money he ever spent.
