Need a idea here. When I draw my Shield from a IWB holster I can only seam to get a grip on it with two fingers to pull it out and it just don't feel very secure. I can draw and fire but get the feeling pulling the gun out that I am going to loose it. No problems once out as I can get three fingers on it and had feels just fine for shooting. It is a 40 and I am using the 7 round mag which is some what better then the 6. A mag extension maybe? I want to shoot this for IDPA and may have to go to a OWB just for that. Don

That's a tough one. I made my own IWB holsters that are form fitted behind the full grip of the gun. That helped me quite a bit in being able to wrap my fingers all the way around the butt of the gun without fear of grabbing T-shirt or skin. I pull with my thumb on the inside top edge of the sight, middle and ring fingers wrapped solidly around the butt of the gun. It's a nice solid draw.

Thanks I will see if I can get the thumb into the draw. Never carried before so this is all new and some what a real challenge. Don

I use my Shield for IDPA.

I highly suggest a good OWB holster. Your typhical IWB holster assuming you're right handed would be more or less over your right rear pocket and that would put you past the safe 180° mark. Safety first, you always want your muzzle pointed downrange. A decent inexpensive holster would be a kydex paddle holster readily available at most sporting goods store, its made by Fobus for the M&P Shield, goes for about 30 bux. It's what I use. For concealment, you can throw on a button up shirt or a cheap fly fishermans vest. Your also going to need a dual mag holster for your mags, speaking of which you'll need at least 3 of the 7 round mags for your Shield 40.

The M&P shield in 9mm or .40s&w is a excellent choice for CC & IDPA matches.. I own both a 9 & 40 shield, its hard to decide which one to use or carry, I love them both!

As far as drawing, I'm right handed and what I do is reach back with my right hand & extend my right index finger out forward and keep my middle, ring & pinkie fingers together & reach back with those 3 fingers & lift up & grab hold of the grip in one motion. As I pull up to draw on target my index finger is aligned along the side of the pistol, finger off trigger. As i bring this motion up at the same time my left hand is coming up to support my right hand, aligning my thumbs, left thumb under the right thumb pointing at my target. Finger on trigger once target is identified, pull trigger, destroy target.. rinse wash repeat if necessary. :)

Is your holster adjustable for height and cant?

This is why I always buy the hybrid IWB holsters. They can be adjusted if you don't like the fit

Thanks Ron I will pick up one of those I already have a Panther Concealment OWB for my 1911 I also am going to use. A local guy here in NE Florida makes them Panther Concealment Custom Kydex Holsters and Knife Sheaths and does a nice job. Don

Yeah there ya go, something like that would work. Speaking of a 1911 .45 pistol, I almost had a remington R1 follow me home yesterday but me think I save a few bucks if I wait until Sept. Theres no sales tax during that month on arms & ammo! :D

Don't forget the popularity of IWB appendix for concealed carry. I've never carried any of my guns that far back when I carry IWB.

Yes both. Right now I have the height so it is deeper in the pants figured that gave better concealment that could be the problem. I also have the cant set straight up. Don

True but the OP was looking for a holster to use for IDPA matches, I believe apendix carry is not allowed in the matches.

I have mine set above the pants but the front dipped 1/2 way down. This way the grip is on an angle that keeps it concealed and easily grabbed

I don't think it is either along with shoulder holsters both due to the way the gun points as it is drawn. I am just getting use to the IWB for EDC and will use the OWB for IDPA. I do like the gun better at 2 to 3 o'clock but it is harder to conceal for EDC. Don

Don, I'm 5'-11 & 165 pounds, with my frame body and a Alien gear cloak tuck 2 IWB holster that I use, positioned just above my right rear pocket (4 o'clock), my own wife didnt even know I was packing my Shield 40 in my cargo shorts & black tee shirt. In that type of holster, or similar the pistol was laying flat againt my body yet, like anything else, with practice I'm able to whip it out in a second. What I do is, in one fluid motion, first with my left hand reach around & lift up the right rear of my shirt at the same time my right hand w/fingers posed as stated in previous post draw the firearm. I can do that in one second flat.

Had same issue. I use the 8-round mags; helps with getting a shooting grip on the weapon while holstered. Adjusted the IWB holster to ride higher on the belt with 15 degree FBI cant. Works for me.

The raising it up really helped and I can wear it at 2 o'clock if I need to but with it there it is hard to sit down with it there as both ends of the gun digs in. For EDC it is going to work at 4 o'clock. I guess it is at 4 it is just behind the right hand belt loop. Maybe that is 3:10 or 3:15. lol Don

If you can't get a proper shooting grip on your pistol in the holster but you can once it's out, you have it set up wrong or have the wrong holster.

I carry my Shield 40 in a Bianchi/Safariland Model 135 Suppression holster at the 3 - 3:30 position and can get a proper grip on it.

I wear about 2:30 (ish) with a forward cant. Basically directly over my front right Jean pocket. The butt end of the gun touches just about 3 and gives the appearance of a cell phone if it prints at all. I drive a lot and the seats in my GMC wrap way around but don't touch the gun. Makes for the very most comfortable ride for me, but YMMV.
