Guys looking at both the 9 and 40 in the shield does one have more issues than the other? Since they are the same physical size I would like to have the 40 but if the 9 has less problems I would buy it.

Thanks

There have been a few reports here of kaboom/pistol disintegration with the 40. Haven't seen any such reports with the 9.

I have a 9mm but see no reason not to buy a 40 if thats what you want. Yes, there were a few kabooms with the 40 but it seems like an ammo issue more than a gun issue. It is a good gun.

Yup ^^^ Most, if not all Shield40 Kabooms (and there's only a confirmed handful of those) have ended up being ammo related.
It suggested to stay clear of Buffalo Bore, MagTech and a few other brands.
*** Especially stay away from any company claiming 40 '+P' ***
(there is no SAAMI spec for 40+P)

It's really what you're comfortable shooting. I have a 40 Shield & I like it a lot, but I don't have the problems with 40SW that some complain of. If there's anyway you can try both before buying, that would be best. Maybe a range near you has them for rent? Best of luck with your decision.

I have a FS and a Shield in .40. Like them both, shoot great and never a problem. I run 98% reloads (my own) and never a blip.

The 9 shield is a go....
higher capacity
less of a kick.. the
ammo is abundant. . The
ammo is cheaper. ..

I ve read the 9 is more accurate at further distance do to the cal.. i cant confirm this

I have run 390 rounds of my reloads through my new 40 and it hasn't had a single hiccup. My reloads were for my 40 CORE and are petty hot loads. The gun is hammering my old wrist petty bad and I am kind of wishing I had gotten the 9mm. I know a lot of it is I am not comfortable with the grip the small gun just don't feel right but I will get use to it. Don

Not a fan of the 40. Forty cal guns built to share a frame with a 9mm counterpart.Just seem to have more problems than the 9mm's do.I have 2 9mm shield's that run like tops.

Do you own either caliber already? If you own one and not the other, I'd go with the caliber you own....

.... If you don't own either or own both already.... Go with the .40 since that's what you want. And steer clear of iffy ammo if you're concerned.

Heard some people had problems with the 40's. I don't know if it's rumor or fact. I have 2 shield 9's that have been problem free. And I have shot them quite a bit.

As AF385 said, if you already have one of the calibers, maybe go with it.

At the time the 40S&W came into common use, I was heavily invested in 9s and .45s and never saw the need to go with a 40. Hence my Shields are 9s now. Fine choice for a single stack small semi.

With today's array of defensive ammo, 9mm, .40,.45, it's more about personal choice, shot placement and the ability to afford ammo for practice and drills, than just caliber. In my opinion at least, YMMV.

Good luck in your choice.

I recently bought both in California when they appeared back on the list. I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to have the option of either down the road. I have a CCW and have the .40 on my license. Both have been flawless on my reloads and of course factory ammo.
I'm 6'8" with large hands. I must be careful changing mags with either cal. The meat of my palm fills in the space below the rear of the grip with the mag out and if I'm not careful, I'll get quite a pinch slamming a fresh mag home. This is common for me with other autos with a short grip frame.
I think they're both great carry options. I really prefer my M&P .40 and my Kimber .45acp ultra carry II overall. Much more comfortable in my big hands and no pinching, but heavier and larger to carry
Can't go wrong with either Shield in my opinion.

I don't mean to side track the thread, but could you explain the comment about the 40 being on your CCW? Is that a Cali thing and how many guns can you have on your license? Do you have to qualify which each one?

No problem on the diversion...California allows only 3 guns on your permit. You must qualify with those as well. You can substitute a qualified pistol for another, but all three must be on your permit. I also had to go through a 16 hour class; 8 hours class time and 8 hours range time. I thought the class would have been unnecessary at first but turned out to be excellent. Each county or city of issue determines the kind and amount of training.

I've owned both 40 & 9 in the shield. Other than the fact that I don't handle recoil as well as some folks, and found the 40 uncomfortable to shoot, I personally would have a hard time picking between the two calibers. In fact the 40 ran flawlessly and ate everything I fed it with zero hiccups making it "trust your life on it" worthy for certain. I tried to love it... I really did. Alas, the 9 won and the 40 was rehomed. Darn my recoil sensitivity!

I've got a 9mm & it's a great gun. Never been a fan of the 40 cal in any gun, but that's just me.

9mm is much more enjoyable to shoot frequently. Having both the 40 and the 9, the 9 is always the winner to the average shooter. I'm always gravitating to the large bores to master that recoil but lots of practice with .22 medium and large frames to get technique and confidence.
