Just purchased a new Shield for CCW and I noticed something I think is off (or maybe just a quirk?). I shot the first mag, ejected it, put in another mag and went to hit the slide release and nothing. I tried again and nothing still. It is so stiff to the point that my thumb is red before it will release and not always does it even then. Anyone ever had similar problem? Love the pistol and how it shoots. Of course I could just slingshot it but that's not the point. It has a feature that isn't working. Any ideas?

Do you mean the "slide stop" is not acting as a slide release for you?;)

Mine does release for me, but i don't think its marketed as a slide release.

Don't tell Jerry Miculek about this. ;)

I've used both methods of releasing the slide on multiple semi-autos, and have settled on using the lock/release catch/lever to send the slide home.

Mine was the same way...1000 very fun rounds later and I can easily thumb it shut.

Same for me. Nearly if not impossible when new but after a few hundred rounds it got much easier. Now it is very easy and is my preferred method when doing a mag change. It is still very hard to use the button to drop the slide on an empty mag but that's the case with most guns.

Like i said mine is a release, and i use it as such at times. But the manufacturer labels it a "stop".

I understand. But some guys seem to think that because its labeled a certain way, it cant or shouldn't be used in another way.

Why have a serrated exposed button to enable it to be used as a release if it's just a stop. My wife had a pk380 that only had an internal slide stop, you had to slingshot the slide after loading a fresh mag. still trying to determine which works better for me.... slide release or slingshot.... with my shield.

This is a non-issue. Read your Owner's Manual. It is "slide stop", not a "slide release".

After inserting another mag, just rack the slide and you're good to go (shoot).

Slingshoting seems to be the preferred method, since it gives the slide an extra fraction of an inch of travel to strip the top round and ram it in the chamber. I've used both methods with many different pistols. Trying to retrain myself to stick with the slingshot.

Using the "sling-shot" method is the primary way to close the slide. We teach this because it works on every semi-auto. Pressing the slide stop to release the slide is generally faster, but it is not located in the same place on every gun.

Were the mags full or empty when trying to release the slide?

Those are technically slide stops not slide releases. Sling shot is the "universal" way to chamber a round in a semi auto. Slide releases and slide stops are in different locations on different guns, some are on the wrong side (lefty). Whereas the sling shot is the same for all semi autos of any age or design

Personally I power stroke instead of slingshot. I find it easier and faster and gets me back on target quicker.

As a leftie I learned to use the slingshot method since the slide release is on the wrong/left side of the frame for me.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned it yet, but both my Shield 9mm and my .40 Pro Series automatically go back into battery if I "robustly" insert the new mag. No need to do anything else. Like others, it took a bit of break-in for this to start happening.

Yes, mine was the same, too. It was during the same time that it was hard to rack the slide.

It has loosened up considerably since then. I just learned to pull the slide back and release it. Finally, I can do it either way.
