I have a 9mm Shield and could only manage with some difficulty to insert 7 rounds in the 8 round mag. The pistol is new so the spring may just be extra stiff. Is this a common thing? Is there a speed loader available to help push the rounds down?
Thanks for any info.

Yup... Probably one of the top 5 questions, along with the slide being hard to rack/lock open, the mag being really hard to seat, the RSA (Recoil Spring Assembly) and mag availability.

It's normal... If you don't already own one, get an UpLula (Universal Pistol Loader) by Maglula to make getting that last round in.

+2 on what they both said.
Some of the best money I ever spent.

I gotta say, I read on this forum for a long time what great tool the Uplula is. I thought I really didn't need one of these. Been loading magazines by hand, all kinds, for years by hand. No big deal...

Then I got a shield a few weeks ago. Oh man, those little mags are tough to load! I nabbed an Uplula shortly after. Now I really kinda wonder why I waited so long. It's a great piece of gear that works VERY well. My range kit won't be without it any more!

Do it !

I balked at the price of the Uplua for years. I did buy a different brand that was half the price but not as universal. Finally broke down and bought one about the time I bought a Shield. Well worth the cost.

Yup +6 or whatever. And when you see it's about $35 don't even flinch. You need it for the Shield, but I would be willing to make a small wager you'll use if for every magazine you own. It's like a car with power steering.

Thanks for the info. I thought I was alone with this problem. I got the Shield for a great price, $375 with a $50 gift card included which brought it down to 325. Bought ammo with the card and then I bought a DeSantis mini scabbard owb holster for it which works great. Guess I'll pay for that loader better then wearing out my thumb.

Yup--agree 100% with Rob...even after over 4,200 rounds through my Shield, I nearly always use my UpLula--so glad I bought one.

You might also try storing your new magazines fully loaded for a while (days/weeks). It helped a lot when the springs were brand new. I know some people will say that it is the cycling of the springs that helps break 'em in, but in my experience, doing what I described was the ticket!

+bazillion to what Rob said. lol Bought one for my wife because she had a hard time loading ammo into the magazine of her Ruger. Using the UpLula makes it so easy.
