Shield Paid for Itself....

You best be buying your puppy a steak tonight! If I HAD to choose between my gun and my 90 lb powerhouse, I would take my big girl at my side.

People who've never had a dog can't understand this. My 100 pound German Shepherd and I had an absolute understanding that if someone tried to hurt my family, that someone or my big, beautiful dog would be dead on the ground. Only a dog would willingly fight to the death to protect his family.

God, I miss him.

Have carried concealed since 1974 and have had dozens of situations where I pulled my weapon where I was in control. I live in a gated community and my home is surrounded by an 8' block wall and an 80 lb. Lab. Back of my home is mostly glass. I'm sitting 2 days ago at my kitchen island chatting with my wife who is making me a grilled cheese. Dog goes nuts and I turn to look into backyard and a guy enters my kitchen with my dog chasing him. He is 10' away. I can not begin to to tell you how fast this happened. From tranquility to shock and pandemonium in maybe 2 seconds. Remember, the dog is making a hell of a racket. Bad news for the intruder. My wallet, car keys, cell, and Shield were sitting on the counter within reach. It felt like it was super glued to the holster. I pull it and it looked like I shot him with a 12 as he bailed out the door and dove over a 8' wall into my neighbors yard. The guy stunned, stumbles out my neighbors gate right into me and Mr. Smith. End of story. 15 year old son of neighbor doctor writing scripts for himself was confronted by his mother and he pulled a gun owned by the dad. She threatened to call PD and he cracks 1 off and beats feet which put him drugged and armed in my kitchen. Yes, I got luckier than Clint Eastwood last night!

Just remember, self defense is a myth you know. The police and Washington say so.

Last year, when a scumbag approached my car with a hand in his hoodie pocket at 2AM in a parking lot occupied only by me and my vehicle, it took a strategic display of my Beretta to end matters. Im 26 years old, and I was shaking like Michael J Fox after that near miss.

Regrettably, there are no bugles and trumpets played when a gun saves a life. Its typically under circumstances no one wants to re-live in front of a TV camera in any event, so the selection bias continues in our media.

Glad to hear that you & yours are ok. I too carry at home, and this is a perfect example of why.

Not saying it didn't happen, but there no news report with a shooting similar to the OP's account in Arizona. Just sayin.
What you've said is a round about way of saying you don't believe him.

So what? It's a good reminder of the world we live in. You never know when something could happen. The Boy Scout motto is "Be Prepared" and it's a good thing to take to heart.

Kinda like what I was thinking. My internet report was damn close to my police report statement. Just the facts as I recall. Our newspaper police blog report will be: Date. PD responded to a domestic dispute call at address, blah blah. No names. JV. This is Arizona. The most liberal gun laws in the nation. We do have CCW permits but you don't need one to conceal carry! Newly enacted law that endangers all LEO's. Turn 21 and pack what you want legally. BTW, I was a Boy Scout....

So true and thank you. The 5th Lab in my life is getting a great T-bone tonight. She gave me those extra seconds needed. Again, I need to stress how fast these things can happen. Re-run it. Your wife is making you a sandwich and someone enters your house! I'm thinking our landscaper hired a new guy, maybe needed a bathroom, etc. Hard to process quickly when you are in your safe, comfort zone.

Glad to read that you & your wife are OK & the pup is enjoying a T-bone! It might be time to consider adding some barb wire to the top of that eight foot fence.

close call

dozens of times is a lot of scary encounters.
You must be in law enforcement.
glad it worked out.
good luck
Mike

Two scumbags have had their Birth Certificate revoked in my home town this year while they were somebodys house where they didnt belong. Only one made the News reports. The other where a 90ish year old little old lady used her late husbands pistol (that he brought back from the war Colt 45) never was reported by the media... is the OP s area is anything like mine, Cops, Fire and EMS go out of their way to ignore / annoy the Media. Freedom of the press? Doesn't give you the right to invade my privacy due to a fire, crime or medical problem.

To the OP you said gated community? Home owners Association? Any way you /they can insure druggie son doesn't get to come back to Mom and Dads post release?

I was nervous just reading it! Glad it worked out in the best way possible, everyone's safe, perp is in jail.

Not only is this a good reminder to carry at home but to make sure you lock your doors immediately after you close them. I would rather be aiming at him through a window than in my kitchen!

Thank you all for the "glad you, the wife, and dog are OK" responses. Got my H&R bracelets back today. 3 generations wore them and I will pass them to my son when I see him next. He is a mucky muck with HMLS. BTW, these cuffs weigh more than a Shield..... My wife brought them to me and said "do you ever plan ahead"!

A friend of mine in AZ......

I'm glad you're OK and didn't have to shoot him.

People wonder why I carry at home. You just never know when you'll need it. If it ain't within arm's reach, you might as well not have it at all.

....got home invaded and couldn't get to his gun. They beat him pretty bad, lucky they didn't kill him.

Donmc01: Glad to hear you, your wife and the pup are safe. Glad the perp is not running free. Glad you did not have to discharge your weapon.

I totally disagree that the " Newly enacted law endangers all LEO's" Why?? Because you do not KNOW who is carrying?? You have No reason or Right to know if I am carrying, whether civilian or LEO--NONE of your business.

An armed encounter will shake you to your core. I ended an armed face-to-face encounter (hostage situation) during my LEO days w/the BG down and three rounds from my service revolver in him. I was shaking so badly I had to be helped to a chair and given a glass of water.

I'm glad this ended well for you and your family, no shots fired is the best outcome.

Shield paid .....

Glad to read that you are alright. I have carried on duty and off for over 40 years. This sounds like a typical report. Drug offenders do stupid things. I always have a firearm within arms reach. Never had to shoot anyone, but drawn and taken down many. Gated communities like to keep bad press down for the sake of their sales. But, it is at the expense of the home owners. I also have a dog, small but is very alert and barks at anything near our home. Often a great first alert. And, better than our alarm system. Glad you did not have to shoot. It could have been tragic for all concerned. But, do not hesitate if you have to shoot. Stay safe.

I carry at home as well. Some people hide guns all over the house, but those could easily be out of reach when stuff happens out of nowhere. Carrying on you at home could be just as important as carrying when you're out and about.
