The Dan Wesson and the Shield are two different animals. With Subcompacts, new owners many times need to start from scratch, as if they were completely new to shooting.
If your shots are all over the paper, it's probably not the gun... It's most likely the shooter.
Reassess your stance, grip, trigger pull and follow-through, with someone (preferably an RO, or Instructor) evaluating these points.
Start with the target at 3yds/9ft and evaluate your placement & grouping.
STAY at that distance until you are satisfied with grouping & placement, THEN move out to 5yds/15ft and stay THERE until you're satisfied, then repeat at 7yds/21ft, then further.
Depending on how long it's been since you've taken a formal shooting class, if the regimen above doesn't help, it may be time to take a refresher class to (possibly) eliminate some bad habits you might have picked up over the years.
