Shield Plus in 30 SC now too.

I wonder how long it will be before you can buy 30 Super Shield Plus magazines?

This is a valid concern, and one which Smith & Wesson would be wise to address across the board when it comes to their pistols. I have yet to see a single specimen of a spare magazine for my M2.0 9mm Compact available from a local shop, nor are there ever any in stock when I check the popular online retailers. It seems to be a common theme for modern Smith & Wesson pistols to have a shortage of magazines.

9mm and 45ACP are two very old rounds. They were developed when metallurgy was not advanced and they are both mild, low stress cartridges. Both cartridges have had more recently developed competitors that set out to substantially match the performance of the older cartridges in smaller, high-performance packages.

I have nothing against the newer calibers, but I'll take the older, low-stress approach unless the newer competitors offer something more substantial than a round or two of more capacity.

If it's safe to assume that the 30SC will be chambered in 9mm-sized guns, if you start with a 9mm barrel, and just make the hole smaller, it looks like the bolt thrust, and the hoop stress on the chamber is pretty much the same as 9mm+P , at the SAAMI maximums. I wouldn't be surprised if they reverse engineered the max pressure based on that as a goal.

It would be just fabulous if they didn't have to cost 30 or 40 bucks a pop too.

I do agree, but I can also live with the $30-$40 price point considering that the only magazines that are significantly cheaper are those for Glock's, and I'll take a steel Smith & Wesson magazine over Glock's plastic mags without complaint. I generally feel that 6 magazines per semiauto handgun is sufficient, so I won't let that be a deterrent. The fact that they are nowhere to be found does cause me some concern though.

A 9mm Shield Plus has a maximum capacity of 13+1.

A 30 Super Carry Shield Plus has a maximum capacity of 15+1.

Smith & Wesson calls that minor difference "revolutionary". I don't think so.

Do we know when the 30 sc will hit the market?

Now that there's more information out on this, it appears that the goal for the new cartridge is to get 9mm performance out of a smaller one to get two or three more rounds into a small pistol.

Personally, an extra two or three rounds is not going to be enough for me to want to replace my 9mm, especially since the performance is essentially the same. It's not the same as when I switched from a 6+1 Officers ACP to a 13+1 micro compact, with a substantial increase in capacity (and reduction in weight.)

Of course there's also the issues of availability, ammo cost, and dies for reloading, along with the question of if enough people will think it's a big enough upgrade to keep the thing alive commercially in the long run.
