Shield Pocket Holster

For those that pocket carry the Shield, please try the Tueller drill

If you can pull it off with a shield or similar sized pistol, you are a much better man than me

Until Santa brings me an LCR, I haved moved to IWB only....... My cm9 stays in the safe and my M&P 45c is now my EDC

I picked up the DeSantis Nemesis for my shield today. It's a little tight in the pock compared to the one for my PF9, but it's still usable. For $20, it's a nice option to have, but I don't think I'll be carrying my shield in my pockets like I used to with my PF9.

Sticky Vs. Remora

Were it so easy...

Bigger people have problems too. Years spent in the squat rack have left me buying pants to fit my legs. The pants being sold now have trended so much toward the skinny legged style that almost none of them fit me. Guys with skinnier legs have much more 'drape' in the pocket area and will have less of a problem getting away with pocket carrying a Shield size pistol.

Brands of clothing vary greatly in term of actual pocket size too. The style of pocket (angled vs. on seam) can make a big difference in what is visible. Pocket proportions/attachment may also cause the rear sight to catch trying to fish the gun out of the pocket. For not a lot of money, a person can have a seamstress sew in a bigger and more substantial pocket in pants that come with too small of a pocket for carry.

I bought a Sticky holster to try out with my Shield for circumstances where I can't wear a belt and IWB holster. While I don't plan on using my Sticky for a pocket holster, I have tried that mode of carry around the house and find it an acceptable solution with certain shorts or pants.

The problem I have using the Shield for pocket carry, is the same one I find with most small pistols: putting the square peg in the proverbial round hole. By design, pistols are more square than a revolver. My gold standard for pocket carry has a always been a Centennial J-frame. The round form of this revolver just flat works better for getting a gun out of the pocket. Absent the the corner of a pistol, a Centennial revolver is way more pocket friendly.

There are, of course, tradeoffs inherent with a five-shot gun, which is why many are looking for the Shield to replace their J-frame. I have a 9mm J-frame (the 940) that is all-stainless and weights within an ounce loaded of my Shield with a 7-round mag and one in the chamber. While 8 vs. 5 rounds of 9mm makes a strong argument for finding a way to make the Shield work for pocket carry, the practical reality (for me) is that the J-frame simply works better with most of the shorts or pants I wear.

The photos below illustrate how close the J-frame (940 here) and Shield are in size, yet so very different in form factor. The holster shown is a Sticky Holster MD-2. See: Sticky Holsters - Redefining Concealment

Just a quick question. Which is better? Sticky or Remora?

Just a quick question. Which is better? Sticky or Remora?

Each company has their loyalists, but after owning examples of both, I would give the nod to Sticky. As I understand it, the owner of Sticky used to be partnered with the owner of Remora, but went their separate ways at some point.

For me, the Sticky material is nicer against bare skin. The only time I use them is when I'm too rushed for a regular belt and holster or wearing clothes that have no belt loops, which usually means no extra layer of clothes between the cover garment and holster. This is when the Sticky's smoother texture is most appreciated. The fit, finish and materials used are a little better on the Sticky, but that is not to say the Remora is poorly made, or that it really makes all that much of a difference. The Remora has a reinforced mouth option that the Sticky doesn't, but I found it added too much bulk to make that worthwhile and reholstering is not really much of a concern for this carry option.

Thanks

That helped me make up my mind. The sticky website is easier to deal with as well. Thanks

I got the Sticky for my Shield. I only tried it in my black jeans front pocket. A draw results in it coming out still in the holster. I have to try other pants. I think my pocket is loose at the bottom and tighter at the top.

Another nod to Remora

I have been carrying in a belly band, and now have a Remora RFT. While I usually apendix carry, I can pocket carry with the Remora if I choose. I did not find the website difficult to navigate and had my holster within days of my order.
Thanks goes to Alan at Remora, and to all the Remora wearers who posted about it.

Hickock45 does a video where he pocket carries a Springfield XDS. He mentioned that for pocket carry he uses the kydex Alabama pocket holsters for pocket carry. They are similar to the Aholster, but fill the pocket a little better and curve with the leg. For 30 bucks it looks like a small investment that may prove to be ideal..

I was real happy with the one I got recently for my Shield 40 from Bob Mika. I started a thread on the M&P Pistols forum about it a couple weeks ago and posted some pics there, if you're interested.

I carry my shield in a bob mika holster..I have had a glock 27 holster for 7 years that works really well for M@P shield. Have never had a problem drawing or holstering. Highly recommend them. they are handmade

For those who both pocket and IWB carry, you may want to check out the DeSantis Pocket Tuk. It has all the usual Pocket holster features, a reinforced top, so it doesn't collapse and a removable adjustable cant clip.

I found one on eBay for $20 with free shipping.

It seems like a lot of people have upgraded from the PF9 to the Shield. I too went this route. My PF9 was in a DeSantis and I am looking at getting one for my Shield as well on those HOT Texas days where I go light. Hard to hide the Shield sometimes so a pocket holster would work great. I use an IWB "On Your Six Design" kydex holster, it is slimline and easy to put on.

Just a quick question. Which is better? Sticky or Remora?

I have a Sticky Holster for my shield and can pocket carry in pleated Dockers with no problem. I'm 6'2" and 200 lbs. The first one was a little tight on the trigger guard but Mike at Sticky fixed the problem immediately. He has super customer service and actually answers his phone.

I have several requirements in my po ket holsters. I tend to sweat and get hot spots with the nylon and leather holsters. I don't want any rust on my gun so I needed to reduce anything tha t caused me to sweat. So I tried a kydex pocket holster that also had a thumb push. I first gor one for my S&W 638. And it worked great! Now that I just bought a new Shield, I wanted the same. I did a search in ebay for "smith wesson shield kydex pocket holster" and found one for $20. I highly recommend this is you sweat a lot like me. Otherwise, I love Remora holsters. You get a 2 in 1 holster. I have one that has the sweat shield for IWB, and it also works great in my pocket. Thise are my recommendations.
