Do any of you have problems racking the slide on your M&P Shield? Every time I rack it back the slide lock engages and will not release unless I engage the slide release. Maybe I'm screwing something up.

The magazine was empty. I was becoming familiar with working the gun as it's my 1st handgun so I haven't loaded a magazine to chamber a round yet.

Yep...empty mag is the problem. Pop it out and rack...rack...rack.

First Handgun... READ THE MANUAL FROM FRONT TO BACK and it will tell you everything you need to do with your FIRST handgun.

ALSO,take an NRA safety course and get some real training.

Guess I'd better hit the gym. Got my Shield today and in my opinion, it's rather difficult to rack and lock the slide to the rear. Any tips?

Mine was tough too out of the box. Even my boss thought it was tough, especially with non-dominant hand. After I disassembled and cleaned and oil, it seems a little easier. Try cleaning and oiling as it states in manual and then try.

When the weapon encounters the magazine follower instead of a real round it will engage the slide stop and keep the chamber open this is normal for the Shield as well as most all semiautos.
It is a way to let you know that you are out of ammunition whilst at the range or in a self defense situation and is normal, you could buy some snap caps which are not real ammunition and rack the slide and chamber one of them and actually pull the trigger to get used to how your weapon operates. Of course a snap cap will not go off so you will have to manually rack the slide for the next snap cap by hand but is a good method of seeing what happens when you pull the trigger to correct bad habits before they develop!

Went to the range today for 1st time and shot the Shield. The slide racked easily. Gun shot well with no failures. The operator needs more practice shooting, but the gun performed well.

Good to hear and as time goes on you become more familiar with your Shield and be able to offer help to some of those with less experience!

Have fun with your Shield and practice not only safely but with confidence! If you encounter problems you can come here for some help!

Longingly waiting for my Shield .40 to come back from the factory, to repair mag drop issues. Actually I have 2 of them being repaired. Do you have the 9 or .40? If you have the .40 shoot 200 rounds though both mags and see if you have any problems. My issues didn't manifest until I emptied 4 mags, then the dreaded mag drop issue. Good luck.
