I'm really interested in the Shield. However, being a LEFTY the safety is giving me hesitation. Has anyone looked into the possibility of having it removed, and would there be any detrimental impacts from doing so.

I know some have removed the safety's on the bigger M&P's, but this one seems to be a bit different design.

I really would prefer this gun without the safety, regardless of opinions that it "never" will activate by accident.

If you are handy and do it carefully, you can take the slide off and saw off the safety tab with a hack saw, then file it down smooth. Quick and dirty, but mission accomplished. Make sure the safety is off when you put it back together!

I am a lefty as well and do not worry about or use the safety on the Shield. If you holster carry it, you do not need to use it. The only time it would be a concern would be if you pocket carry it.

Tom,

I would have to respectfully disagree with this. Here's why.

There's this guy running around named Murphy. Murphy even has his own set of laws... :)

If something can go wrong, it will go wrong. With your life potentially hanging in the balance, the last thing you want to do is assume a mechanical device won't doing something.

If your only going to use it for a range gun, I agree - just ignore the safety. However, for a defensive firearm you had better practice to remove that safety every time you draw the weapon. If you're a lefty and you can't do that, either modify the weapon (something I'm not fond of) or find another pistol to carry. The 9C is practically the same size with the only real difference being the width. Honestly, I don't believe the 9C is any harder to conceal than the Shield with the exception of pocket carry. With the 9C you can get it without the safety.

I wish S&W had left the safety off or at least made it optional because I would rather not have it on the gun. All of my other striker fired defensive pistols are safetyless, so having the Shield forces me to train to use it differently than my other firearms... I don't like doing that, but I like the Shield so much it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

don't need to remove it

You can leave it off and you won't even notice it. It is small and inconspicuous. It is not like the safety on the M&P that sticks out.

I have many firearms and some have a safety and some do not. I incorporate sweeping the safety into my training sessions even on those that do not have one. It is easier to automatically sweep than trying to remember if you have a safety or not.

Humor? I just bent mine back and forth with a sidecutters under the slide until it broke off inside. Problem solved, and didn't even have to use duct tape.
