I just noticed my Shield front sight no longer has a white front dot. Has this happened to any one else? I never use the dots to align the sights but I thought this was odd. I always thought they were painted on.
They are painted on, and are notorious for falling off. Call CS and they will send you a new one. Alternately, a drop of white paint or nail polish on a toothpick will also work.
This problem is notorious to all brands. Go to any brand specific forum and you'll find this same issue.
Sometimes the sockets don't get cleaned (degreased?) well enough and the paint doesn't grip.
Get a Q-Tip and clean the socket real well, then use the nail polish (or model paint) color of your choice (in your case... maybe black?) and refill the sight's socket.
At one time, I drilled out the white paint on all the dots and replaced with Siteglo. Poor man's night sights. It works, but after a while you just figure it's better to go with a set of tritiums and be done with it.
I have experience with Trijicon, Truglo, and Ameriglo on M&Ps. Have had good luck with Truglos. Decided to give Ameriglo a try on a Shield 9mm. No issues to date, but time will tell. Trijicons are a bit more expensive. My first M&P LE45 has a set and no issues. My 9C has gone through two front sights and I replaced with a set of Truglos.
Mine didn't fall out, just wanted something different. Used flo orange nail polish up front, and after carrying for a year and a half and 1000 rounds, still hanging in.
On the rear, I blacked em out, but now have flo green. I like that setup, but might go back to black. Thing is its cheap enough and easy enough to experiment with.
