I just got the shock of a life time when I went to FedEx to ship a S&W to a dealer for a guy who bought it via the internet. Not doing anything except following the law closely. Declared it to FedEx and provided them with a copy of the FFL's signed license. The lady behind the counter went through the usual routine of explaining why it had to go over-night and I told her I understood it was their policy, not required by law.

Then the bomb landed. It was $79.06 to ship one (1) handgun and two (2) spare magazines from Arizona to Louisiana. The last gun I shipped with them, maybe 6 months ago was $48 and change. $76.06 to ship one handgun. That's almost double the price in about 6 months, just ridiculous.

Yep - FFL can ship USPS and under $20 is routine. My FedEx location ships 2nd day saver knowing it is a gun because if overnight is not done overnight you can get a refund.

But if your FFL ships it he must enter it in his books first and he may charge for that.

Actual shipping cost is usually under $20 by USPS, but many dealers add a pretty hefty fee. If you have a dealer who will ship for cost you need to patronize his business heavily.

The FFL 2 miles from me charges $45. In Orlando I can get it done for $20 less. Gas is almost $4/gal and a round trip is at least 3 gallons and an extra hour each way(during normal business hours). I pay the $45. Joe

Dave, I think that UPS is cheaper but I could be wrong as they may have gone up also and some have mentioned the USPS will ship guns???

The shipping cost are higher and FFL fees (use to be around $15 now as high as $40+) have been going up as many LGS are being taxed and priced out of buisness daily! The only few left are commanding premiums on the transfere fees for just a few minutes work! :(

BTW, Thanks for the deal and communications.

My LGS says minimum $50 to ship and another $40 if there is a transfer coming back.

I get it, the LGS wants me to buy from them rather than using them for a delivery service but it kills any deals for me other than FTF.

There is in reality no federal legal requirement to declare your package as a firearm, if you are sending it to an FFL. Anyone that tells you otherwise has no idea what they are talking about. You can ship about any handgun with appropriate insurance for between $15 and $20 UPS ground. Anyone who rebuts the above by posting the FAQ from the ATF website that says you must declare the firearm, has not read the actual USC and CFR cited under that FAQ.

I believe you're mistaken. From the ATF website:

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

FYI Gander Mountain quoted me $75 to pack, insure, and ship anywhere in the US from Minnesota.

You're either a pretty funny guy, or you didn't really read my post.
