Shoot out in Detroit

The bad news is an off duty officer was shot in the leg by a would be armed robber while pumping gas late at night, probably after he got off duty. The GOOD news is that the perp got the worst of it because the LEO was carrying an M&P 40 (DPD-issue carry weapon) and at least one spare mag...priceless.

I hope (although I know it's wrong) that if the criminal survives he spends the rest of his life in pain.

While I wish it hadn't taken place, I am thankful that the Detroit Police Office was chosen as the intended victim instead of one of my kids, as he had the mind set and training to fight back.

I'm glad he was prepared and did what he had to do, as most LEO's (including retired LEO's as well) have to. It's unfortunate that he got shot and I do hope for a speedy & full recovery for the officer and limited pain for his family as well.

And this hits home a little more for me because I'm from the suburbs of Detroit originally.

For the life of me I don't know why he stopped at a gas station in Detroit knowing what he knew. I don't EVER stop at any gas station/store inside the city limits for those reasons. I work around that area and that is one of the worst off places in Detroit. I'm glad that the officer made it out OK after all of this.

He stopped there for gas because he needed gas that is why. By him stopping for gas and taking out the bad guy, it shows others they cant get away with preying upon people. Even people in the ghetto deserve the right to live their life unmolested. I understand that you wouldn't stop there, but that is what cops do, they take a stand.

If we are lucky, the police officer will make a complete and total recovery.

As a taxpayer, I can only hope that the piece of sh*t perp dies slowly from his wounds, and the justice that was served comes from the officer shooting back. Garbage like that doesn't deserve to breath the same air as you and I, and I'm not interested in paying for his three meals a day, cable tv, or housing while he pals around the courtyard lifting weights with the rest of the animals who are locked up in prison.

Since I'm the OP, I'd like to highjack this thread and ask your opinion(s) about the following related CCW issues:

- Do those of you who use a revolver as your primary CCW, do you carry extra rounds in a speed strip or loader?

- Whether or not you carry extra rounds, do you feel you have an adequate amount of rounds, given what the DPD LE experienced?

- Same questions for those who CC (semi-auto) pistols.

Maybe he needed gas?.....Maybe he knew he had the means and capability of defending himself. Maybe the bad guy thought he would be like many of the "free" citizens of Detroit and other progressive cities, who aren't able to defend themselves and live in fear of people like him......

-When I carry a revolver, I carry extra rounds in a speed strip and a BUG. Also a speed loader if I have room in a pocket for it.

-I'm not certain what the sequence of events or range was in the DPD officer's incident, or where or how many times he hit the bad guy, so I'm not sure if he needed to empty the mag or if that is what he was trained to do. As for me, I am comfortable with 11 shots ready to go between a primary revolver and BUG, plus reloads.

-When I carry an auto I either carry a high-capacity pistol and/or a spare magazine, plus a BUG with a speed strip.

I hope that the officer makes a speedy and full recovery.

I carry either a Sig 239 in .40, with one in the pipe, which is 8+7 or a Sig 229 which is 13+12. I am good with either set-up.

+1 on that. People shouldn't need to live in fear, no matter what location it is at..ghetto or not. Plus, even if you know it's a bad area, doesn't mean you should have to avoid it...especially as an LEO. It's your job to protect others...yes, even off duty.

I carry a 40 compact (10+1) and normally don't carry an extra mag unless I happen to have cargo pants on or something where I can slide the extra mag in an unused pocket. Then I will carry an extra one. Or if I happen to have a backpack or something on me. But since I'm a "bigger" guy (and I don't mean tall ), it's not really comfortable to have an IWB holster and an extra mag on the inside of my pants. If people here wouldn't freak so much about people carrying (even though open carry is legal here), then I would carry OWB plus two extra mags as well and I'd be fine.

I had the chance to back up a cop one day at a gas station, he was out of his car talking to five fellows when it became apparent that a few were trying to get around behind him, circleing like sharks, I pulled my truck over behind him so he would have a backstop, all it took was eye contact and he knew my intention. A few seconds later two other cruisers showed up and I pulled off. My pistol was in my lap, nobody saw it, but I would have helped him if he needed it.

I re-evaluated my carry weapon after the shooting at the station. I would normally just carry a 5 shot Smith with a speed strip. After the shooting I carry nothing less then a Glock 27 and a reload. Two and from work, I now carry both.

And taking "that stand" got him shot and almost killed. Being a DPD officer, he know that there is at least one robbery almost per night at a gas station/store bare minimum. Yes I carry a gun, but no, I don't go into dangerous areas just because I know that I have means to defend myself. Not a smart idea at all cop or not.

I carry my revolver on a limited bases, pretty much based on were i'm going. But just like my autos, I carry 2 extra speed loaders. I would feel a lot more adequate with the amount of rounds if I was in the same spot AND I had my auto vs my wheel gun. Amount of rounds per reload is one of the main reasons why its rare that I carry my revolver inside the city of Detroit.

I don't know if he was driving a work car or not, but that gas station is one of a couple where they automatically remove taxes from the bill when you're filling up a government vehicle (I work down the street)...other places refund the taxes later, which is slower. I typically avoid that place....the last time I went in there I had to intervene to stop a fight between two women. R,

I work as a Medic in the ghetto. For the local folks, HP and I've done special events in Detroit since I was 18 and I just don't look at things the same some of my family that refuse to go into the city. Granted I carry every day (except on the rig) and have a reload at least in my car at least. So him stopping at the gas station is no big deal he needed gas and probably stopped there hundreds of times.
As for feeling comfortable with my choices. I carry my smith 669 with 13 and a 14 round reload so that's 27 rounds of 9mm+p hst. If I'm in lighter clothes I have my P32 with 8 in it and a reload of 10. So that's 18 rounds of gold dot. Yeah I'm good with that. If I'm feisty ill carry both.

If it isn't a smart idea, then all Cops should quit their job. Cops take the job to do what others do not. (They really don't sit on stinking DOA's or defecating psychos or get involved in idiotic family disputes just for the fun of it) The Cop could have gone to a nice gas station in East Cupcake, got out of his car to fill up and had a drunk soccer mom in her Lexus SUV run him over. I worked in some of the worst neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Ny during the crack epidemic of the 80's and 90's. fewer than 1% of Cops ever have to fire their weapon.

I am not trying to be contrary or demean your opinion, just giving my thoughts on the matter.
