I did not find anything worth spending the money at the gun show on my birthday earlier this month so I have been keeping my eyes open on Gunbroker. Saw what looked like it would be a good shooter Model 19 in very good condition. It was wearing Goodyears in the seller pics.

It looked to me like it was RB under the rubber. It also had a target hammer, red insert, white outline rear sight blade and a smooth combat style standard trigger. I figured from the shape of the trigger that it was a serrated trigger that had been smoothed. I was not looking for a collector so I bought it.

When it arrived I pulled the grips and found it was indeed a RB but that it had been converted from a SB. I was a bit disappointed at first but the trigger is so smooth and a bit lighter than normal. I expect that whoever did the SB to RB conversion did some trigger work and it would not surprise me that the target hammer was added to give it a bit more mass for ignition. As long as the primer strikes look good and it goes bang every time I will not mess with it.

When life gives you lemons, you get in touch with the Culinas. I dropped Jennifer a email asking if they by chance had any K frame target conversion grips. As luck would have it they did. John had some leftovers from a rifle stock blank in Turkish walnut and had made a set. She sent me a pic and I said SOLD! as soon as I saw it. While I was waiting for the set to arrive I put a set of Thai RB grips on it for dry fire purposes. They fit pretty good but are a bit long fore to aft for my grip.

Well, this afternoon when I got home I had a package on the table. I opened it and immediately started drooling like Pavlov's dog. Here are a couple quick pics to show why.

A closeup just because.

All of the sudden I have no regrets about getting this one. I do not know how much the original owner spent on the work but this will take over much of the shooting duty from my 95%+ Model 19-2 in original condition.

P.S.

Anyone know if the Model 19-4 still had a over travel stop coming from the factory?

That's a beautiful gun and the stocks look great. Why do some guys go through the work of rounding the square grips? Go easy on me, I'm still learning a lot about Smiths.

RE trigger stops: I recently read that some police agencies removed trigger stops from S&Ws because of a perceived danger of the stop loosening and jamming the weapon, which accounts for at least some S&Ws currently in use lacking that part.

My 19-4 4" and 6" both from 1980 came with the stops. I doubt that anyone would do the machine work to fit that style of trigger stop.
Yes those adjustable internal stops have been known to come loose and jam the action at the most in-opportune time. If you are using the gun for any serious purpose remove it.

p.s. Good looking 19 and grips!

I think it's something to do with the difference in hand size of various shooters myself. I've always preferred Magna target grips, but I have really large hands. When a friend shoots one of my S&W's with the Magna grips they often tell me the grip seems too large. So I think the smaller round butt fits smaller hands better, and likely the previous owner had small hands and wanted that shape.

Plus, the RB has a smaller profile which makes it easier to conceal.

I have average-sized hands and prefer the RB combat grips based just on feel.

I got Big hands and I prefer round butts. I don't care how big your hands are your little finger is the smallest one and on the bottom of your hand so it only makes sense that thee bottom of grip should be smaller not larger.

Lot easier to hold something tapered with the small part down than the small parrt up.

I'd like to chop my 6" 19's barrel off, right in front of the lug. And then maybe a RB wouldn't be too bad of a thing.

I doubt I'll ever do any of that. It's a really good shooter as is. But it would balance a lot better with less hanging off the front.

Turn it into a three inch. Fun part would be the front sight.
