Went to range this AM to shoot new 610 mountain gun. All was fine as sight adjustment was required. Unfortunately after a few cylinders the gold dot front sight went flying! Swept range in front, below and behind firing point, nothing. Checked inside of range bag, zip. Not bad I guess with my eyes at 20 yards.
Not sure what do do about missing gold dot other than get jeweler friend fo make another and I'll use red loc tite or see what he recommends. Not happy at all…..

If it were brass, it would tarnish. The gold bead sights are actually gold- but not solid gold. They are a lathe turned piece of steel that is gold plated and then set into the front sight blade.
The gold bead is not supposed to fall out though. I'd let customer service know about your first range trip and let them replace your front sight.
Other than being very disappointed in the wayward bead, how is the rest of the gun?

Overall guess the new 610 is ok. However honestly my 5" M27 is quite a bit better and just about any of my K frames I shoot are better. This is the first range trip so hopefully " things" will get better. Also there was NO Forcing cone, just straight bore diameter from end of barrel to lands, about 0.375" depth which is another issue that has to be "fixed". I used a small round stone on dremil followed by small Cratex stone to " create" a forcing cone. looking for a shop that has forcing cone cutter as would only be 5-10 minute job. Gun shop I bought 610 from gave me a free year at their range. Should have gone shooting immediately after buying it as dot would have gone flying in their range. Might have just got my $$$ back. Gun shop/ range is several 100 miles from home. However if in the Columbus Ga. area check out Shooters gun shop as its one of the best in the state.

Had a Long day of cleaning and inspecting couple pistols, Mdl. 67, new 610 mountain gun and Colt Delta Elite. Delta Elite was a breeze as its a 1911 type, lol. Mdl. 67 had never been disassembled and totally cleaned. Amazed at the crud but all is well now. Lead build up in front end of cylinders was unbelievable and took using a bronze brush in hand drill to remove it all. Was afraid of having to ream cylinders to 0.358"- 0.359" but was lead build up. Was sticking cartridge in end of each cylinder bore to check. Then came the new 610 mountain gun. Removed side plate and was amazed at how different it is compared to older S&Ws. Cleaning was easy and use a soft stainless cup brush in dremil to clean face of cylinder, pretty happy with the outcome, to range tomorrow even without the gold dot front sight. I changed the factory wood stocks/ grips with some Pacs and will see if it is more controllable as the wood kind of slipped in hand.

I think I've read on this forum before of someone who had the gold bead go flying during their first range trip on one of the new mountain guns.

The gold dot on my, Check that….. Smith and Wesson's 686 MG (they've had it 20 times longer than I have. I only had it for 2 days, then sent it back. So that comes to $600 a day to be frustrated)
Meanwhile back at the gold dot story…. Mine got launched before the 15th shot. Did I mention that I spent $1200 on that thing?

I love gold dots....
made by Speer.

You guys have some nice guns, shame about the sight failure.

Is there a way to swap the front blade for a standard SW red ramp?

That would be a call customer service problem.
S&W Customer Service has always been helpful.

Called them this AM and replacement gold dot is on the way. I asked why they did not use red loc tite, he said they don't use it in case it got into other parts??????

Launching the brass/gold bead is not unique to factory sights, have an aftermarket one that lost its bead as well but the front site was on a 629 with flanking Magnaports that direct the muzzle blast right at it.
Good news is you will receive a new one and they are relatively easy to swap.
Also you will have a spare, I filled the hole with white paint then scraped it flush, makes for a nice bright dot.
An interesting side note is that the Pachmayer fg combat grippers the Op swapped onto his 10mm are the same type that SW supplied on the Great grandaddy to all Mountain Guns the 629-2 Mountain Revolver.

the red stuff is pretty much permanent unless you get it really hot. Blue is sufficient for most low torque and lower heat applications.

Never liked dot sights, prefer to paint or nail polish the front sight. I did go with hi-viz for my 625 that I was using for combat shoots. Black on black sights are hard to pick up fast.

Was surprised and happy with the gold dot on the mountain gun, will see when replacement get here.
Have used loc tite in machine tool construction since the late 70s and on automotive applications, its old school to me.

While I'm easy going about things like this. Tool marks, small scratches, and what not, that would twist my tail to no end. I must say that my one experience with S&W customer service was better than I had any right to expect. Actually, I didn't expect it, they went above and beyond.

My experience is that Loctite products are great. Unfortunately, it appears a lot of users don't understand the manufacturer's recommendations for use, or just don't bother to read them.

I had never had a revolver with a gold or brass bead front sight until my .357 MG arrived. I quickly learned to despise the thing. I would be delighted if the one on my gun flew away. On my front sight, the bead is cross-pinned vertically with a very small pin, or it appears to be. I have a plain back Patridge blade sitting on my coffee table waiting for me to take the bother of installing it.

Aside from the nuisance sight, I'm not much impressed with the gun - except with its price. Negatively impressed there. I guess I have just outlived my usefulness as an S&W revolver customer.
