Good day all. Just curious to hear if anyone else has a tradition when it comes to the range with family or friends?

My son lives out of state. But every time he comes home we make one day as a day at the range. Sometimes his buddies show up and sometimes it's just us. We take a variety of pistols but the tradition is we bring "Papa's" Remington .22 rifle. I inherited it from my father in law and my son was very close to his grandfather.

So the tradition is a three part one
First, at the end of our shooting session we each get 5 shots out of the tube fed .22 at various targets. Person with the most misses treats for lunch. Most of the time that's usually me since I wear bifocals and my son is in his mid 20s and was in the Marines. Plus he's a crack shot no matter what he uses. Sometimes I think he lets me win.

Second, we wash up
and go to lunch at a local restaurant. Great food and we reminisce about Papa and tell stories about our time with him. Plus we catch up on what's going on in life.

Third, we head home and clean all the guns at the kitchen table. We spend the entire time trash talking each others shooting skills. We've come up with some real doozies over the years and laugh lot after a great day of father and son bonding.

So what are your traditions?

My sons are 43 and 39 now…(seems like yesterday when they were born).

My ex-wife is a nurse, and was able to schedule her shifts at the hospital around my fire department work schedule. As a consequence, we never had to put our sons in day care when they were little; one of us was always home with them. On nice, warm days when I was off, I would pack a picnic lunch, and we would head to my rifle club to punch holes in paper.

My sons and I are all NRA Life Members, but my elder son is less interested in shooting, and rarely goes to the range these days. My younger son, however, is a federal law enforcement agent, and an enthusiastic shooter who long ago surpassed me at the range.

In 1994, when my younger son was 8 years old, I bought a Ruger 77/22, and mounted a Leupold scope on it. It quickly became his favorite rifle, and I can't count how many rounds he's sent downrange with it over the years. We still get to shoot together every once in a while, and he still shoots that 77/22 every chance he gets. Of course, it will go to him when the time comes, and then, I hope, to his son… :-)

My son had several guns when he was in his early 20's that he sold at some time or other.
About 15 years ago he was looking again, tried some of my revolvers, not too interested. Then I had an H&K USP40 come off pawn, that was his birthday & Christmas gift that year. Since then he has added several Rugers. I visit him in Missouri at least once a year and he comes home once a year. Always a full range day together, we usually go thru 700-800 rounds of ammo. And he came full circle to appreciate revolvers. Has one of the best, a Model 66-2 4 inch that I picked up at a local live auction for a decent price.
Yes, he is a much better shot than I am!

My youngest son (32) lives 15 miles away and picks me up at least once a week to go shoot .41 mag in the woods. Of course, i'm the one with the Dillon 750. At 75 i still shoot pretty good so i'm proud when he beats me. (which is becoming more frequent)
