short throw long throw hammers

Is there any way to interchange? Could you remove a long thrown hammer/trigger and install a set from a short throw or are the studs in different locations?

Anyone tried this? Asking before I try a short throw set in a 1917.

Folks like King's converted pre-war long actions to custom short actions (speed action I think they called it?). They shaved the back of the radius and moved the pivot pin hole on the hammer, similar to the K22-40 pre-war 'short' action design. The same could probably be done to make a short action hammer fit, but it would take a lot of skill.

That said, finding a 1917 (any pre-war N frame) hammer shouldn't be too difficult. Post a WTB in the classifieds here and you'll likely come up with one.
I probably have one, but I'm eyeballs deep in moving right now. I don't even know where most of my stuff is at.

I agree with all that's posted above. Not an easy process to convert a 1917 to the post war short action.

Are you looking for a shorter single, double action, or both?

I ask because most aren't aware that all 44 Triple locks came with a shorter double action than all pre war N frame actions that followed. It was accomplished with a different DA sear (the 'hammer fly').

The easiest way to convert your 1917 action to a shorter double action would be to use a TL DA sear. Of course they're not easy to find. However if you have a TL or if you have access to one, you could easily reshape the 1917 DA sear to match the TL sear which is shorter.

I happen to have 2 TL hammers. Can I install one of those? I want to replace the hammer on a 1917 that has been de spurred. Neither Numerich and Gun broker have any and the only one I have seen on Ebay is $80. I have several modern hammers and triggers

I have not tried a TL hammer in a 1917. I suspect it would work. The TL hammers have thrust bushings which may make the hammer too tight in the frame when the side plate is tightened down. You'll just have to try it.

Here is another thought. If I replaced the rebound slide, copied the machined slots in a side plate and modified the hammer I should be able to install a hammer block. Right?

That should work. You'd have to notch the hammer face below the firing pin for the sliding bar hammer block.
