Shorty 40 Model Number

Very few of the PC models have actual model number on the gun. The early Shorty-Forty were labeled "4006 Shorty" on the box but there aren't any model numbers on the guns.

My box says 4006 and my frame says 4013. Everything else matches. I double checked with S&W that everything was legit before i made the purchase. So, some of the later mk3's are actually labled 4013.

Well, what do you see? The pistol is marked Model 4013 and the label is marked 4006. And that is the first Shorty Forty that I have seen with the model number on it. Where is Grinder? He surely has the answer. Oops, I overlooked his comment. However, someone got a great deal, $500 for a nice Shorty Forty with three mags, case & manual. It was a 7 day auction that only lasted 4 hours and 36 minutes before someone bought it now.

And it looks like you got a good deal on it too...I saw that on GB before you bought it and never even notived the 4013 on the frame...

I had just lost an auction for a similar one earlier that week for over $600 and this one had a "buy now" price of 500. So i struck QUICK. Very happy i did. Id really like to see if this is a unique gun or if there are others out there like it.

I dont understand why the S-40 were marked mod 4006 on the boxes to begin with because if anything they were more like their mod 4003 alloy brethren than the stainless mod 4006. So, imo the 4006 label was a bit of a misnomer. All i can guess is that the 4003 wasnt around when the SF40 was originated. I Never delved that deep into the history though. I think the success of the S40 helped them to decide to develop the 4013. Perhaps they decided towards the end of the mk3 run they weregoing to build a 4013 and i got a "prototype" 4013. I like that story and Im sticking to it ;-)

Nah, I don't think so. SCS&W III says the 4003 was first made in 1991, the 4013 began in 1991, too, and the Shorty 40 in 1992.

They are pretty cool. I bought mine in June, 1993. I will have to shoot it someday!
