I would like to know if I can use +P in the shorty 9. Just got it & the instructions do not say anything.

I agree with Sharpshooter, no need with ammo available, unless its what your dept issues,if so limit its use. +p really torques the barrel and in the alloy guns you can see where the locking block portion of the barrel really eats up the frame. No big deal in the past when S/W would replace the frame ,but no so today for most of the older guns you just get offered a new gun like an M+P. They just dont make the frames anymore. Sub sonic 9 works great. My .02. bob

i have one that I found really cheap on an auction site over 10 years ago. It's one of the most accurate 9mm pistols I've ever owned. I've fired lots of +P ammo thru it with no problems.Change the recoil spring every 2,000 rds or so and you'll be fine. My wife absconded it for her carry gun.

I respond to such questions by stating that I would limit or avoid +p in most privately-owned non-current guns that you "care" about.

Inevitably someone responds by saying that is silly, the guns can handle it fine and frequently point to police dept guns as proof. I think the points made this thread are good. If you have a gun that you (rather than some agency) own and you don't have an armorer to work on the gun for free, and the gun cannot be readily replaced off the shelf, (just about any S&W pre M&P) and the std. velocity ammo is as good as it is, why bother?

Lower cost, lower flash, lower recoil (not that recoil is significant with a 9mm), longer spring life and possibly longer frame life is the reward for avoiding +p, with just the smallest loss of "power."

Some gun/ammo combinations (like a 3" .45) may need +p, but those are the exceptions.

If you are talking about duty ammo for a Glock or M&P or perhaps even a run of the mill 5906, 6906, etc., then who cares...shoot what you want as long as the gun is "rated" for it.

Just my two cents worth.

Hmmmm, now you guys have me reconsidering. I ran about 150 rounds of +p through my shorty 9 and it is my carry ammo. Aside from an occasional mag--when I get 12 rounds I have chambered a few times, my gun sees limited +p usage.

What are y'all using instead of +ps?

I am sure a moderate amount of +p will do no harm, especially if you change the springs every couple thousand rounds. Keep in mind there are heavy bullet guys, light bullet guys and medium weight bullet guys. They tend not to agree. I am not a fan of the 115gr ammo.

For me the following are entirely acceptable:

Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester 147 gr bonded JHP (RA9B/Q4364)

I tend to stick to the 147gr in short barrels.

But, there is no denying that the following are probably "the best of the best." If you want to carry +p, these are certainly "better" rounds than those above, although how much better is debatable:

Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP
Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
