Recently purchased a brand new Silver Elite O/U in 12 AWG with 3" chamber. (28" barrel) Been looking for a few years for a nice one at a good price and found one that has been on the shelf for several years, new in the box. So I didn't worry about the chamber size at the time - just grabbed it. Now I'm wondering about the 3" chamber. My club only allows 2 3/4" shells in some meets. Does anyone know how this shotgun will perform with 2 3/4" loads?

It should be a no brainer to use the shorter shells. If you go back to the 3" just give it a very good cleaing to get the carbon built up from the shorter shell in the chamber.

No problem, the 2 3/4-inch rounds shoot just fine in three-inch chambers. Did it for years with a side-by-side 20 gauge chambered for magnums.

You are ok with any shell length 3" and under. Ninety-five percent of the shells I fire through my 3" 12 gauge chambers are 2 3/4". The other 5% are 3" steel for ducks and geese.

Thanks for the quick info

This is really one of the best forums out there. Great activity and real answers from some straight shooters. Thanks for the quick and useful answers. Looking forward to a lot of fun with this beautifully crafted Silver Elite.

Remember also that the shell length is the FIRED shell length. The unfired length is about 1/4" shorter - this allows for the crimp part to open before the forcing cone. Firing ammo sized longer than the chamber will lead to increased pressures, and in certain guns that could easily mean a burst barrel or serious harm. This is especially true with older guns, in particular older SxSs.

+1;
A lot of the companies that put out 2 3/3 chambers are not
of very high quality and patterns are not the best......

With a 3" chamber, there is plenty of room for the end of the hull
to open up and let the shot and wad pass, with out any obstructions.

My 3" gets great patterns with 2 3/4 inch light loads at trap and heavy payloads in the field.

You are GOOD to go !! Now get out and use that gun.......
