This story is from the New York Daily News:

"Marine Corps officials said Monday that there were reports of shots being fired at a base in California.

The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, also known as TwentyNine Palms, was locked down just before noon after gunshots were heard, according to officials.

All personnel on the base were ordered to shelter in place.

The combat center, which was used for flight training during World War II, is home to one of the largest military training areas in the country."

Somehow, I think Chesty Puller would have had his Marines go out and find the shooter, NOT "shelter in place".

My son was there for a MOS computer school in 1999. He actually got to pay homage to one of the original 29 stumps.

Nobody in the world wants our Marine Corp to be "Kinder and Gentler!" (except for our enemies!)

I know that this isn't combat but, Whatever happened to 'Run to the sound of the guns?'

Chesty Puller would have had them fix bayonets before searching out the shooter

After service on Guadalcanal, Chesty was ordered back to the States to tour bases to speak about the recent fighting. He went to Aberdean Proving Gound and saw the newly developed flame thrower. After a demonstration, Chesty asked, "Where do you attach the bayonet? "

Easier to find one rampaging guy with everyone else "sheltered in place" Figuring out who cranked off some rounds is a lot harder when you got the whole base full of Marines charging around looking for a shooter. I can see a possibility for bad things with 2000 Marines out wanting to get "the guy"
Besides why would you need a bunch of Marines if you suspect only one shooter?

"Shelter in place" was probably the best thing to do. Marines generally do not carry weapons with them while going about their jobs daily. The MP's have their weapons as all police do when doing their jobs. Better for them to hunt (and maybe find) the perp, then a bunch of unarmed Marines to try to take on an armed individual.
