This is how mine came that I purchased this summer. That other slot, to my knowledge is for another magazine. I believe it is slightly thinner, just because it has not been stretched by having a magazine held in it.

Thanks for the info, you are the first that has had the same foam. How do you like your gun, have you made and changes to it, such as sights or anything?

I have the full size M&P9 but my foam is the exact same. Mine is all stock for now. The M&P45 mid size is on my horizon though. I have heard many positives about the APEX Trigger kit.

M&Ps have been sold in special kits from time to time, with additional parts (knives, holsters, mag holders, etc.)

Your box looks like the foam insert had been prepped for a S&W knife or something of that sort. It's too narrow/small to have been for a lock.

That's what I think. It is half the width as where the mag was and a slight curve at the bottom of the opening
