Should I buy Shield or XDS

I just want to chime in to address something.

S&W does not advise swapping the Shield 9mm barrel into the .40. Since they DO concede it can be done on other models of M&P, I would add a word of caution that there must be a reason they warn against it when it comes to the Shield.

Safety message over. :)

WOW this is a tough one. I own both and like both and so much of this decision comes down to personal preference. Between the two I prefer the XDs and just like the feeling hand better. Size wise they are almost identical, that said I like the XDs so much I'm on a waiting list for their new 9mm version when it arrives. You can't go wrong with either.

I also live in Illinois but have CCW from Utah & Florida and as soon as I hit into Iowa I am PACKING. I own both of the fine handguns. The shield is very comfortable and accurate to shoot and carry in the pocket, However when I look at the hole in the end of the XD/S 45acp vs the hole in the end of the 9mm. The 5+1 rounds in my 45 will do a hell of a lot more damage then the 9mm's. So therefore my choice is my XD/S. Just my 2cents 4 U.

According to Police Studies Council the hit rate for police officer shootings is about 25%.

Assuming a citizen is equally trained if you discharge the XDs with 6 rounds of 45 in a gun fight approx 1.5 round will make contact. ( We are not talking kill shots but hit shots)

The Shield 9mm holds 8 rounds. Assuming same hit rate of 25% 2 rounds will make contact.

Question ? If you are in a gun fight would you prefer 1.5 hits or 2 hits?

Will the XDs 45 with .5 less hits over the 9mm Shield be enough to stop the threat?

Research has shown using thousands of actual shootings on average it took about 2 hits from both a 9 mm and 45 auto to stop the majority of threats.

That .5 difference in hit rate suddenly makes a difference.

Yes, you could carry an extra magazine but it takes on average 3 seconds for a person pumped with adrenalin to realize the gun is empty to inserting another magazine.

3 seconds is the length of most gun fights so extra magazines is not an option to improve the odds.

Based on real life stats your best bet to increase your odds of survival in self defense is to get to the 2 hits stops most threats and if you are as good as a cop 8 shots will be required to reach that stat and you better do it in less than 3 seconds if you are into odds.

M&P Shield or an XDS?

Can’t comment on how the M&P Shield shoots, but the one I dry-fired seems to have the same overall feel, super ergonomics and the same great in-hand feel as the M&P 45 I have with a 4.5” barrel. The darn thing just feels like it was made for my hand. M&P’s are a great pistol; just wish S&W would smooth out that rough trigger feel (I’m going to go for a trigger mod for mine very soon).

As far as the XDS; I own one as well, and it’s a very nice pistol. For such a small frame & 3.3” barrel, the recoil from the 45acp is very controllable. At 15 yards, grouping was amazingly good, and I’m no professional. With the XDS 45acp's relatively small & narrow frame and a traditional single-stack 5 round mag, it may be a nice concealable pocket pistol, but your pinky finger will fall on the underside of the mag if your hand is larger like mine. If you opt for a XDS, buy an optional 7-round extended mag which comes with the grip extension.

Also, I’m not aware the XDS platform is yet available in a 9mm. My wife has the XD sub-compact 9mm model which has a 3” barrel. It is a completely different gun than the XDS. Although the XD sub-compact's barrel is smaller in length, the pistol is larger overall than the XDS 45acp. The XD sub-compact has the higher capacity double-stack mag like the other XD line, and has a wider frame and generally a bigger overall profile than the XDS. The wife likes her XD sub-compact; it shoots very smooth & accurate, not to mention the cost of 9mm ammo vs. 45acp. This is the pistol which is a comparable size to the M&P Shield.

I believe you'll find the light strike & other problems you may hear about on the higher-end, smaller frame pistols is from cheap and / or defective ammo being used, limp-wrist and / or soft-grip handling by the shooter- not the pistol's themselves. (As compared to a friend who has a Beretta Nano 9mm and who went with my wife and I to a tactical defense training class, and that’s all that pistol did was jam & misfire.) The S&W M&P's and SA's XD / XDS on the other hand are all very well made in my opinion, and we have had no such reliability issues whatsoever with any of ours from either manufacturer. Just keep 'em clean, hold on and shoot a better grade ammo. Use the self-defense nylon tipped or hollow point ammo, and I’m sure the 9mm will do the job. If you’re considering 40cal; with ammo cost & recoil all considered, you may as well go for the big-guy 45acp in my opinion.

As far as your budget, you’re not going to find the XDS for $500 out-the-door (maybe a XD subcompact alone without the accessories kit). The Shield I believe is however in that price range. If you like the M&P's ergonomics, trigger feel and the budget is $500, go with the Shield (not to mention the M&P is an all-USA manufacture, where the XD & XDS’ are manufactured mostly in Croatia- albeit a region of the world that makes some fine guns).

My general recommendation however is before you buy, take the time & find a dealer who has some demos / rentals and spend $50-$75 on some ammo, range time and / or rental fees. Shoot any of the M&P and XD line of pistols they may have; go with your gut feeling of which manufacturer’s engineering feels best for you and then place your order & buy! Good luck, and great news about Illinois maybe passing a CCW law.

I haven't even been able to hold a shield much less see one. I do own a XDs and will say that I'm surprised at the accuracy of the little gun. With the 7 round mag, at 25 yards, I shot a 3" group. Haven't shot it at that range since, and it was only 7 rounds, but I can say I done it, once. I carry the M&P45 as my primary duty sidearm with the XDs as my backup / off duty gun.

Thank you everyone. I have found the black xds for 510 shipped so it can be had. But I have placed a deposit with my local gun shop for the xds in 9mm. I am number 2 on the list for bitone. What turned me off to the xds in 45 is the round count coupled with the fact that every time someone talks about the recoil they say "for a gun that small the recoil isn't bad." In my mind that means if this recoil was in a bigger gun, that gun wouldn't be desirable. I want something the wife and I can shoot as well at the range. I have never shot a 45 but have shot a glock in 40. I just have no clue how it would feel.

I actually held a walther pps today and it felt real nice. The nano was really small in my hand. Still no luck on the shield or xds yet anywhere.

9mm is a good choice. The problem that I see with my .45 is I have to reload more. As far as recoil, I can compare it to a glock 27. My wife, 16 yoa daughter, several of her friends, and several of my friend's daughters have shot it, with no problem and loved it. So, guess in all, buy the .45 also.

I got the XDs 45 I really like it. I'm on a waiting list for the 40 Shield so I decide to pick up the XDs 45 till the 40 comes in. I'm new to handguns got my first one back in Dec. so I don't really know how a gun should feel in recoil my 9c, 40c feel the same as my XDs 45. I'm not a big person and have small hands don't know if that makes a difference. Like someone else stated when practicing with the XDs you just have to reload more often which can be more time consuming if you don't have a lot of time at the range. Just My 2cents on the XDs 45

Shield 40/9mm

If you want to swap Shield barrels. Buy the Shield .40 and get a 9mm barrel. This works but not conversely. The Shield .40 magazines will work with the 9mm barrel installed in the Shield .40 frame and slide.

Shield VS. XDS

For those looking for a Shield don't give up. I am starting to see a few around and prices are down below MSRP at some shops. I ordered one with a deposit and last Sat picked it up after 30 days. I also have the XDS and am trying to decide which I like best. The Shield is about $100 cheaper which is a fair amount in this price range.
Good Luck
