Should I get a 22a, or something from some other (lesser) manufacturer?

I have a 22a
Great little 22-very happy with it
sure it's not a 2206 or 41 but they are not $200ish new either
The trigger is decent-to good
Accuracy is great
Reliability is good-to great with most ammo
Very good value in my opinion
My 22a is my holdover till I can get a 41 and 2206:D

I don't like it!

I tried mine out, and I don't like it at all. The trigger is very bad! The accuracy stinks, groups scattered all over the place, and the mags don't shoot 10 rounds without chambering problems.

After my "wonderful" experience with the 22A, I took out my High Standard 22. Trigger, NO COMPARISON!, accuracy, NO COMPARISON! The only thing wrong with the High Standard are mag problems.

I'm going to get rid of my 22A. I'm going to try locally first.

I have S&W 22S and Ruger 22/45.

My 2 pennies -- Both have been trouble free reliable pistols and a pleasure to shoot. Both will stay on a 2'' target all day long at 50 feet with cheap Fed Value Pack from Walmart. The 22S can produce slightly smaller groups. The Ruger can shoot dirty much longer. Don't know what they are capable of from a rest or with higher grade ammo at longer distances. Triggers are about on par. If you like to modify, Ruger pistols have a lot of available accessories and high performance gadgets from Volquartsen and others. You can't go wrong with either pistol, IMO.

ps. Rumor has it that Ruger disassembly is a pain. My 22/45 has well over 50k rounds through it.... if I ever take it apart I'll let ya know. ;)

nntw, if you like the 22A go for it. Two friends and I plink regularly, one has a 22A, another has the Buckmark and I have a Ruger MK III Hunter. Each of us like our particular pistol for our personal reasons. The Buck is occasionally ammo sensitive, the Ruger cost the most. The only "negative" for the 22A is it cost much less that either of the other two, ha. Accuracy wise all three pistols are more accurate than the three old guys pulling the triggers. There have been no issues with the 22A what so ever.

Go for it.

Bought a new 22s instead of 22a for the heft, and strength of stainless steel on (this date) 9-11-01.

Great shooter, with light, crisp trigger, though this gun does not feed W-W Wildcats very well. Just about everything else feeds very smoothly, especially the Federal Value Pack ammo from wallyworld.

I frequently see shooters at the range with S&W 22a pistols, so I'm thinking it must be a good value for the cash outlay.

I have the 22A and a High Standard Dura Matic. My 22A is by far the best shooter out of the bunch. Easy to add scope/red dot and supper easy to add different barrels. I put the target grips on mine with a Tru Glow red dot and a 7" barrel. After 3k rounds I have no complaints at all. The 22A makes for a better squirrel gun than the High Standard any day. And did I mention that S&W customer service is the best thats out there? Wouldn't get rid of mine for good money!

I have never had a 22a but from my experience with the Ruger MkII they have been great guns. I also own a High Standard 107 Trophy which have been known to shoot with the Smith 41s but the 22 of mine I like best is the 617

My high standard model 107 BLOWS the S&W out of the water.

I went back to the store I bought it to express my unhappiness, and they suggested I try and break it in a bit more, and they gave me a box of win wildcats to try with it. Hope I can make it work!

So, I found myself annoyed by the fact that any 22A is well over $300CDN up here- this with the two currencies almost at parity. I kept holding off, holding off....

Then I came across an ad for a Browning Challenger for $300.... and the store also had an S&W 17.

Next thing I knew, I'd ordered both of them!

So, we'll see how this works out!

I've had my 22A, 7" for nearly 12 years and more rounds through it than I can count, but something north of 20K. It was cheap to buy, remains cheap to shoot and will eat anything. It was a tack driver right out of the box but have added target grips and a red dot sight just for grins. The trigger gets better with time and rounds down range (but was never bad to begin with). I cannot imagine more bang for the buck in a just plain fun plinker. A few dings after all these years but still a lot of fun to shoot. (o;

Mine is anything but what you posted. Mags don't shoot 10 rounds, NOT a tack driver by ANY MEANS, and the trigger is TERRIBLE!!!

I contacted S&W and they suggested I send it to them. I will be doing that, with more to follow after their evaluation.

Maybe they built them better a decade ago but I have met nothing but happy owners down at the local range. Hopefully S&W can get yours squared away. Maybe mine is blessed with extra good karma as I bought it with winnings from the Lake Tahoe casinos. (o;

Hopefully things will be working better after repair.

My 22S is well over a decade old. Never had problems with the two mags that came with the pistol new. It's more accurate than I am at 50 feet. Here is a 10 shot 50' group from this morning with cheap Fed Bulk.

I couldn't be happier with my 22A with a TruGlo red dot that fastens directly to the top rail. It is VERY accurate. I had some feeding and ejecting problems initially, but I dremeled the feed ramp and slide contact points with a wire brush bit, and ever since, no problems with feeding, firing, and ejecting. Keep her lubed. (that's what she said) :D

Hello All,

I shot my 22A in a steel match. Although I was able to hit the steel, mag jams, trigger not firing.

I DON'T LIKE THIS GUN AND I'M GOING TO TRY AND RETURN IT. IF NOT, I'M GOING TO PUT IT UP FOR SALE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT A MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why some have issues, others don't? Mainly luck?

As I posted above, I have had great experience with my 22A. It may be in part that I broke it in with CCI Mini Mag, and since only shoot the Federal bulk pack (as recommended somewhere on this board); but mine has been perfect.
Yet many people have a very different experience. It seems luck may pay a huge part in this.
One of my friends had heard such bad things about 22A, that when I told him I bought one, he suggested taking it back before even attempting to shoot it (he likes to give me a hard time). He questioned my judgment and my sanity (often does). He is a huge SW fan, but thinks I should have bought a "real one" and spared myself the jams (and him having to hear me "whine like a little girl" about it, no offense intended here Ladies, he said it not me:rolleyes:). Whenever we shoot now, after every clips the 22A empties perfectly (and that's all of them) I look at him with a smart @$$ smile, and he tells me to shut up.:D What are friends for if you can't annoy them?

But I did self inflict one easily correctable issue:

One Saturday morning, I had 4 clips in a row, that the 2nd bullet failed to feed. Also the clip did not always drop out then the release was pressed. So I took the gun apart and reassembled without the spring. Clip out=slide was silky smooth. Clip in=drag.
Taking it apart again, and inserting the mag with the slide off I noticed the part (don't know what it's called) that catches the top of the mag, and enables the slide lock.
With the pistol pointed away from you, that little clip catch should be resting on the left side of the top of the clip (need a picture here). Mine had gotten bent slightly to the right (center), in that position it falls nearer the center of the clip. There it would rub the side of the rail on the bottom of the slide. I think that upon reassembly, when pulling back the slide, it slipped off and wiggled before I forced it back into place. I think I must have bent this clip slightly right then. That causes the slide to drag, and downward pressure on the clip. I bent this slightly left, next couple reassemble I did with the clip in to make sure this was always falling in the correct position; and I have not had another single issue.

There may be a lot of different 22A problems out there; but I wonder how many others may be having this issue. Besides this (which was caused by me, and easily corrected) this has been one (so far, only just over 1000 rounds, so it's still brand new) of the most reliable 22s we have (we have 7 others: Ruger 10/22, Ancient Marlin bolt action, Ancient K-Mart special bolt action from the 1960s, Mosberg Plinkster, Sig 522 rifle, Sig P226 pistol in 22LR, and a SW MP22-15 that is being replace after the 109 bullet fired OOC and took out the extractor).

We break everything in with CCI Mini Mag, then use Federal bulk pack in all (as suggested by someone here). Well after the Federal was what OOC in the 15-22, I'll probably just use CCI Mini Mag there for the first 5,000 rounds just to be safe. We also clean all gun well before firing new (I read here this is very important with the 22A so put extra effort there before it's first outing).
BTW - thanks to everyone on this forum for great advice/info. I've been reading from the shadows for a long time, and only recently joined so I can post.

S&W 22a

My local gun store salesman I deal with said I would not be happy with this gun. Nothing could be further from the truth. For the money it shoots and handles great. You can also change the barrels and grips and have a completely different gun. Can't do that with a Ruger or Browning.

Sending Back to S&W

Steve

Well, today I visited the dealer who sold me the 22A. I mentioned my options and we decided that the best thing would be to send it back to S&W, since S&W sent me a prepaid sticker.

They gave me a fedex box. I will include all the mags and a note describing all the problems I've been having. Frankly, if the problems get resolved and I keep hitting the steel plates with it, I'll keep it. Since I have a high-standard that isn't going anywhere (my father gave it to me), that is going to be my bullseye gun. NO COMPARISON BETWEEN THE 22A AND THE HIGH-STANDARD!!!!!! (The high standard is more on par with the S&W 41).

So let's see what happens when I get the 22A back from S&W.

Incidentally, I may be getting a model 28 revolver.

Well, Fedex has my 22A now and it is on its' way to Maine for evaluation and repair. I hope it comes back and performs to my satisfaction.

On a more positive note, I purchased a model 28 today and like it::D
