Should I sell?

I agree with this one. You can get a nice shorter-barreled gun for $800 or so.

You may find out later you wished you’d kept it, and the way it was.
The only regret I have right now is not shooting it enough. The barrel length is what's keeping me from doing that. If I put a shorter barrel on it, the hope is that I'll shoot it more.

If I regret my decision down the road, I'll have kept the original barrel and can have it put back on.

Those 8 inch 629’s are great. Don’t chop it down. If you don’t like it, maybe one of your uncle’s other relatives will appreciate it. Or sell it to someone who will like it. You can get something more to your taste. But try shooting it with some different grips. I recommend Pachmayr Diamond Pro’s or Decelerators, but I’ll bet those X frame grips someone else recommended will do a good job too. You might find what a great shooter that gun is.
He doesn't have any other relatives, unfortunately. The gun shoots great with the long barrel, that isn't the problem. The issue is the heft and lack of portability that comes with the 8 3/8" barrel. I don't plan on cutting the original barrel, rather have a shorter barrel fitted.
Thank you for your input though.

I personally think this "Family Heirloom" stuff gets a little carried away!:D It would be different if you and your Uncle went hunting 3, 4, 5 years in a row with this gun and the two of you had great times together with the gun and it reminded you of him every time you took it out. If I were the Uncle I would not be disappointed if my heir traded it for something they could use. Now if you sold it at a pawn shop for drinking money, well then I might roll over!:)

Keep the revolver and try your hand at metallic silhouette shooting. A long barrel like that doesn't really shine until you reach out past normal pistol shooting distances.

I think if you sell your 629 it will be one of your largest regrets. I have a couple 629 and my 629-5 silhouette 10 5/8 bbl goes to the range with me most. Start with 100 yards and then work your way out to 200 a lot of fun.
