Should we carry an extra magazine?

I personally carry a J-frame. If I carried semi-auto, I would carry extra mags. As has been stated, the magazine is one of the weak links. Having extra on your weak side will also help balance the weight, and makes you symmetrical :)

You SHOULD carry a shotgun if you want to be most ready for most threats. Barring that, carry what is appropriate for your personal ratio of convenience to preparedness.

I usually only carry one magazine...but if I'm constipated, I carry two...who knows how long I'll be in there?

Haa haa....

In Arkansas, state law on concealed carry prescribes how many handguns you can carry--maximum three--but does not speak to how many magazines. I routinely carry a spare.

Two complete reloads was standard equipment for most police officers before any of us here were born. If I was asked in court why I carry spare ammunition, my answer would probably be the same as my answer for why I load with hollow point ammunition:

"Sir, if the police determined it was the best thing to use to protect people such as myself and my family, it seemed obvious that it was the best thing for ME to carry to protect myself and my family."

You don't post often, but you post good stuff. ;)

I hope to catch one of your classes when you swing through Wisconsin... Don't go retiring or something on me.... :p

.

When I came on almost 30 years ago, normal-sized to fat cops were issued two reloads (12 rounds) in loops. Skinny ones like me were issued 1 reload.....I soon learned that an 870 or M-1 carbine in the hand beat a Model 10 and 6 spare rounds in the holster.

I guess i should leave the 4 extra mags for the commander and the 640 for my ankle at home lol

Carry what you feel comfortable with and what you know from your knowledge, training and experience. Lib prosecutors and defense attorneys will try to find an issue with ANYTHING.

The main reason i carry an extra magazine is to clear a malfunction, not as much for the capacity, which is an added plus.

Two spare mags here.

About Mr. Rodriguez, the scenario shouldnt have happened had he dialed his local Police.

It's the other side's attorney's job to make you look bad. If its not about too much ammo it'll be about something else from the holster you wear, the specific ammo you used, to the clothes you had on.

I always carry one spare mag with me. If I have to switch to that mag, then it's time to retreat. Hopefully to my car where I have more spare mags in the door pocket. Freaks out the service guys whenever I take my car in, I have to empty out my mags from the car.

A group of us were just somewhere shady the other night and the guys were saying, I don't have a spare mag, I just don't worry about, I've got enough mags in the car for each of us to have a spare (good thing we carry the same guns)
