shoulder arthritis

I had shoulder pain issues and lost a lot of weight and they went away. I gained too much weight over Christmas and now it is back. If weight loss is an option, it may be a good start to eliminate or reduce further treatment on this and other issues. Unfortunately, medicine (not unlike law) is all too often no longer a profession, but an industry that only exists to separate you from your money. Caveat Emptor.

Rick, the thing that baffles me is I've lost 50lbs. over the past two years, 35lbs. over the past year, and now these problems are popping up. I had a heart attack on December 8th (another thread here) and now this shoulder thing. I've also heard people say that they went off blood pressure medication after losing weight, but they actually added more after the heart attack. I guess things would be worse if I was still as heavy as I was. :(

I developed bad shoulder pain a couple of years ago. I lived with it until the pain spread to my wrists and began to affect my shooting. I couldn't have that! So off to the doctor I went. MRIs (I hate those!) showed some deterioration, but my doctor's PA made an unusual suggestion: She asked me to go off of my statin. I didn't understand why, because I had been taking atorvastatin (Lipitor) for 15 years without a single side effect. But I did as she said, and in less than three weeks, I was completely pain-free! My cardiologist prescribed rosuvastatin (Crestor) as a replacement, and I have remained pain-free ever since. So if you're on a statin, ask your doctor if you can go off of it for a while. In my case, doing so saved me from unnecessary shots, surgery, and physical therapy.

I am on rosuvastatin. After my recent heart attack, they doubled the dose. I hadn't thought of it until now, but I wonder if this has anything to do with the shoulder pain. Seeing the PA today. Will bring it up. Thanks.

I've had rheumatoid arthritis for 26 years and never heard of it being diagnosed by looking at an xray. You need to see a rheumatologist, not a surgeon, first. He can tell you if it is arthritis or not. If it is arthritis, he can give you multiple treatment options. If it is an injury or just worn out, he can send you to an orthopedist then.

Rheumatoid arthritis may not, but osteoarthritis the most common arthritis will show on a X-ray and any PA,NP or DR can see right away what it is.

Not in my case...

Physical therapy may help resolve part of your problem, so apply for a "Silver Sneakers" pass at your local fitness center that is part of the FREE federal program for seniors if you are receiving social security.

I have NOT been able to get "silver sneakers" because I do NOT have Medicare Part B with a supplement...I only have Medicare part A...

An orthopedic surgeon told me that I had arthritis in my wrists from looking at an X-ray a few months back.
