Here is a 617 4” I found yrs ago. Never shot it although it has been shot. The cyl holes have been numbered and the action is smooth in double action by a gunsmith according to the dealer i bought it from. The grips are nice looking, in the sun they kinda glow. Larry

Pm to me on what is an Ashland gun. A gun distributor in Ashland Ohio ordered limited runs of revolvers with different features to sell to customers. The company is long gone. Quantities varied with each order, Larry

Thank you for the info-been at the “S&W gun game” for 50 years and have never heard the expression “Ashland Gun”.

I've heard of Ashland guns on this Forum but never really paid much attention. "Different features," I'm guessing maybe different sights, action jobs, stocks, etc.? I'll probably look into this a little more later on when I'm bored, later on. The stocks in the OP picture, from Jebus, are really nice & comfortable-looking. The rear sights seem to be the common denominator, don't know, of the 3 guns above in the pictures. Thanks for showing. JT

Iirc Ashland was one of the larger SW distributors like Dayton hq or Lou Horton,
In olden times a large distributor might have an idea for a set of features on an existing model that might sell , in the OPs case a stainless version of the K22.
A certain number would be ordered for that distributor and quite often there were over runs, the 617 Mountain gun is another example as is the four inch 14-2 "Hanen Special" ordered by Dayton gun hq.
If they sold well the factory might make a larger run for other distributors but being small runs with unique features they usually become very collectable.

The Ashland 617 is basicly a stainless version of the 17-5 which had a wide rib heavy barrel and no underlug, that barrel carried over to the 17-6 , sometime during the 17-6 run they changed to the full underlug barrel.

I have always liked those 2” J’s with the shark fin front sight. I have made do with a 2” 34-1, but would love to trip across a blued 36 or 50, but is more likely I might find one of the 60’s - they seem to come up fairly often

Do the target sights make a difference on that Model 60 ?

I have not shot this one yet, but the sight picture with the stainless front blade is challenging under artificial light and high sun.

I was always stunned how well the snub 15 shot with target sights, so we will see at the range how the J frame fares. :D
