I find the resurrection of old threads to be a joy to review and many have thoughts that are well ahead of the "new stuff". Here is to old hats, friends and thoughts!

My nastiest hats are the 2 I wear backpacking. One I've been wearing since my Eagle Scout days in the early 80s.

May be a disqualifier, but I do wash them. :D

This old Resistol was a 27th birthday gift from my wife and daughter.
I'm 84 now, so that would make it about 57 years old, and it looks it.
The gun is my Model 19 and the holster is Berns-Martin.

Here's my nastiest hat.
25 years ago It started out jet black with a pretty, gold embroidered, UPS logo and the word "racing" embroidered in red, white, and blue under the logo. It even had bright gold edging around the brim and Dale Jarret's number 88 embroidered across the back in UPS brown outlined in white.
Now it is pretty much all the same uniform dirty gray color of used motor oil, dried sweat, and dirt - with a few smears of paint and silicone gasket adhesive for good measure.
It isn't too badly frayed or torn up - but that's 'cause it ain't ever been washed.
I still wear it working on the cars.

These are my two favorite hats. I probably have 50+ ball caps.

I don't have a "nasty" hat and I'm not sure why anyone would want to wear a sweaty stinky hat anyway. :D

When the white one starts to get a little dirty it goes in the garbage and I buy a new one just like it. I wear it while I'm doing my volunteer work at the hospital.
The other ball cap doesn't get worn very often. It was my brother's and he never wore it because he didn't care for them.

When a hat starts getting dirty I toss in the washing machine with a load of clothes and stretch it over this and let it air dry.

If it doesn't come clean it goes in the garbage.

In my case, that one is easy to answer. To keep my hair out of the dirt, oil, grease, and grime when I'm crawling around under a vehicle on the flat of my back.

Why should I wash it? It is just going to get greasy and filthy again - that is its purpose - to get grimy keeping junk out of my hair. Kinda like a sacrificial anode. It is my mechanic-ing hat.

Besides, washing it would just lead to its disintegration, and there aren't many of this edition UPS Racing/Dale Jarret hat still out there. I've checked on eBay and haven't found any - not a one. As rare as it seems to be, I kinda wish I had used a different hat for protecting my hair :D

As for "stinky", mine only stinks if you find the smell of grease & oil offensive - which I don't. Kinda like the guys who enjoy the smell of Hoppes, or Ballistol :D

My working in the yard hat is and old Vietnam era boonie hat. When my wife see it get salt covered she throws it in the washer all my other ball caps are veteran hats that I wash by just throwing then in the washer. Cant stand dirty hats.
