Some people have been posting some lovely tip-ups in the recent top break thread. So, I thought I'd start a tip-up thread.

So, show us some of those great tip-ups you have.

I'll start with my 1-1-1 and a few engraved examples. The picture of the 3 engraved revolvers are two 1-1-6's, I believe to be engraved by Richard Bates Inshaw, and a 1-2 engraved by Nimschke.

I took a separate picture of the 1-1-6 with rosewood grips with its case. It lettered as a shipment of one to Homer Foot & Co. in Springfield and left the factory April 1860. The case has a brass plate with the name "Nellie Cooke" engraved on it. Through census records, we think she was the wife of George Cooke, pastor of North Church, Amherst, MA.

Here is a Smith & Wesson along with a Plant (Merwin & Bray). Took me quite a while to find the Plant 1st model. Flayderman's estimates only 150 iron first models were made

After seeing some of these, I think I'm just gonna throw mine in the backyard fire-pit.

great tip-up's

Here one of mine that I think qualifies as a "great tip-up". A 1st-1st 5th type in the gutta percha case. The gun and case are as close to 100% new as you can get; 99.9% blue and 100% silver, shiny bore and action so tight it's difficult to open, the case is shinny with no chips/cracks.

Try to take some pictures of engraved tip-ups and post later.

Using that time machine again? :D

great tip-up's

A couple of "great tip-up's" that are unique, you don't see two different models cased together very often. These 1st-2nd and 1st-3rd are European engraved; story is they were made up for a family in France who retained them for over 100 years. The pair were eventually sold and wound up in the U.S. They are silver plated with a light gold wash. I believe they have been fired as there is a little pitting in the bores, otherwise in great condition. Unfortunately my photography abilities do not do them justice.

Shark Bait, you stated: "My only example. An incomplete model 2. Made in 1864." I guess I don't see what's missing. What makes it incomplete as it looks very nice on this end of the net?

orbruce, that is quite a pair, I expected a Mod 1-2 and a Mod 2 or Mod 1 1/2 but that seems like an unusual combination to put together. Very unique , beautiful pair , nicely boxed I give it an A+!! I'd be interested to know why the original owner chose to put them together. Kind of a surprise twist on a matched pair.

Well heck. I went for volume too (I think I'm up to 30 Model 1's at the moment), but here's one of the better ones that's worth showing.

My research suggested that this was scratched by Springfield, MA engraver Edward H. Buckland. Here's another one of Buckland's creations in my collection: a tiny little ladle, suitable perhaps for ladling sugar into a cup of tea:
